Raw Courage
Sopwith Thanks for your comment – it’s published now.
I forgot to mention also that the boys had a fighter pilot Godfather, W/C Bruce Cole DFC AFC and Bar, Kings Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air.
He too was killed in a flying accident in January 1956, flying an English Electric Canberra (WT 529).
Ford Merlins
I have now received a private e mail confirming that the Trafford Factory produced over 25,000 Mk 20,22,24,25 engines between 1941 and 1945, if that helps this discussion, and their production manager received the OBE for this work.
‘Ford’ Merlins
I am surprised out of the 247 views of this question so far, no one has ventured to reply to my question. Perhaps I should rephrase the question.
I refer to the Ford Motor Company (Aero Division based at Trafford Manchester) which was a ‘shadow plant’ making Merlin engines on behalf of Rolls Royce from 1941 to 1945. Every part of the engine was turned by the company and completed to the exacting standards demanded by Rolls Royce. These were then constructed, packaged and sent to a Rolls Royce plant where they were de-constructed, examined, X-Rayed and re – constructed before being placed in a Spitfire/Lancaster/Mosquito. Did these engines have a separate serial number which would identify them? I know the Ford factory produced over 20,000 of these during the war but exactly how many?
Diver Ace
Here is a photo of Flt Lt Frank Brewster ‘Bruce’ Lawless DFC who took part in 60 Anti-Diver patrols between June and July 1944 flying Typhoons with 198 Squadron and credited with destroying 10 V1’s (with his log book showing 16) and 2 FW190’s. He also received the American DFC one of only eight New Zealand pilots to receive this award
Grub Street
Whilst on the theme, forum members might like to know that Grub Street will be launching a book on the Raw family at Duxford on the 3rd September. (Raw Courage)
Flt Lt Peter Raw DFC of 609 Squadron has a whole chapter dedicated to him, with unpublished info and photo’s. His three other brothers also have chapters on their RAF careers as pilots.
Silver War Badge
There is a ‘Roll’ of the SWB held at the National Archives. It gives the rank, regimental number, full name, unit discharged from, number of the badge, date of enlistment/discharge, DOB of holder and cause of discharge, and date of when issued. His medal card will have the official roll list number on it (eg:SWB/ Royal Artillery/4008) These badges were issued during 1919. The badge was not issued to officers who had retired, resigned, or relinguished their commissions subsequent to 31.12.19.
Faking Grips
I wonder if Whitley Project could clarify exactly what he meant in his reply, it could be read that it was aimed at another forum member?
Copy DFC
Hello Graham,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the quicker you know then you can start taking action, even though the seller says no returns (a warning sign!) you should be able to get your money back. Go onto the forum and look under E bay and other auctions section, its headed ‘DFC Still Going Strong’ You need to thank Andy again for bringing this to my attention!
FAKE DFC
I’m afraid you need to get your money back via Flea Bay this is 110% fake. No DFC’s were hallmarked in this way and there are other reasons too. This particular DFC has been discussed on the British Medal Forum all week, have a look. Always buy from a known good dealer or auction house. There are hundreds of fakes out there. By the way a genuine DFC sells for between £1600-1800 yours at around £500 is not a bargin. Sorry for the bad news.
Remembering Flying Officer Robert Alexander Urquhart DFC, Navigator on AJ-Z lost at 0236 hrs over Netterden.
Spade Grip
The Aerojumble at Shoreham Sussex next March would be a good starting point.
