JBoyle said, It looks more like a trip to get video footage for fundraising/pr/propaganda.

I think we have a Bingo! Your suggested budget also fits with Gillespie’s well-known practice of tacking on at least 20-25% to each “expedition” or “research trip” for operating costs. This jaunt is only three people – Gillespie, Smith and another guy identified as a TIGHAR Researcher who, based on the requirements Gillespie set forth, had to have ponied up at least $5,000 for the privilege of going on this “research expedition.” No mention anywhere of how much of his $83,000-plus salary Gillespie is contributing.

Right now he needs every penny he can find …. got a biggggggg bill coming due in December (which he has not been talking about, at all, untypically).

I’m still trying to wrap my head around why a glorified day trip costs $25,000. Seems like much of it is deliberately structured to give new board member Mark Smith something to do. Here is the schedule:

    • Monday morning, December 10 – arrive London Heathrow, train to Yeovil near the museum.
    • Monday afternoon, December 10 – at Fleet Air Arm Museum to video interview the fisherman who briefly hauled up the wreck suspected of being the Miller aircraft.
    • Tuesday, December 11 – confirmed appointment at HM Hydrographic Office with archivist to determine if the British government already knows about a wreck in that location.
    • Wednesday, December 12 – drive to the Channel coast to get drone footage of Portland Bill and check on availability of vessels for a possible search.
    • Thursday morning, December 13 – assessment of research results.
    • Thursday afternoon,December 13 – train to London Heathrow.
    • Friday morning, December 14 – depart.

The latest from TIGHAR: “We haven’t raised enough money yet but we’re going anyway. The logistics for TIGHAR’s December research expedition to England are now completed. Our team will be made up of TIGHAR Executive Director, TIGHAR Researcher Ernie Leroy, and TIGHAR video cameraman and drone pilot Mark Smith.”

Interesting … Gillespie said they needed to raise $25,000 to fund this very modest effort? And Mark Smith … isn’t he the same person who just got appointed to TIGHAR’s board of directors? … and wasn’t he the videographer on the Niku VIII expedition, you know, the one where they solicited member’s donations to make a video of the expedition? The video that never happened. And that refunds haven’t been given on (nothing has been said one way or the other publicly)? Are we getting into self-dealing territory here?

What doesn’t make sense is Gillespie’s dismissive attitude toward a plausible alternative explanation for a piece of evidence that he considers crucial to his hypothesis, as is telling John Kada to “go do some real research.” What was Gillespie supposed to be doing in 2012, when his salary, based on his claimed 80 hours a week working for TIGHAR, was more than $57 per hour? The National Archives and Records Administration office wasn’t that far away from where he was living at the time.

The trailer for Air Strike was … interesting … not the least for its playing very fast and loose with history (but that’s what Hollywood does best).

I’m conflicted about the growing use of bad/improbably/ridiculous CGI regarding WWII airplanes, and have taken to telling myself, firmly, that when I sit down to watch one of these, I’m going to enjoy it for the visual spectacle it is, not with any real hope that it will be or look even remotely accurate. It’s hard to do, but it makes things a little more enjoyable.

Well, it hurts the forum’s usefulness if the Search function utterly fails to … function.

Gillespie never told the members what the financial toll of putting on the Earhart 75 Symposium was, other than saying “… we lost our shirt financially.” No mention of what percentage of the money taken in was used for “operating costs.” The conference website is no longer active, and I can’t remember what the registration fee and other costs were, but as I recall, they were modest.

I would like to see the budget for this “expedition” … $25,000 that MUST be raised in the next month sounds suspiciously like the “$20,000 in a month” campaigns Gillespie launched so he could raise money to go out and raise money for the last “expedition” to Nikumaroro (which ended up piggybacking on someone else’s trip when Gillespie’s efforts came to naught).

NO accounting was ever given for the $50,000-plus Gillespie raised through those efforts, nor was an accounting for how much was siphoned off for the all-important “operating costs.”

Doing a little searching for flights from the US to England, and reasonably nice lodgings, leads one to the conclusion that, 1) Either an awful lot of expensive searching equipment needs to be rented, or 2) Operating costs for sending a few people across the pond are extraordinarily high.

“The Glenn Miller Project is going to England!

To conduct this research expedition we’ll need to raise $25,000 by November 15, 2018. If we’re successful, all contributors to the Glenn Miller Research Fund will receive a video of the expedition.

Contributors of $5,000 or more have the option of accompanying the expedition on all or any part of the trip.” according to the newest fundraising pitch on their website.

No, you can’t make this stuff up. Anyone have a spare five grand? I fancy sharing a pint or two with the expedition team …

No such luck, camp_zero. According to Gillespie, “TIGHAR’s investigation is now The Glenn Miller Project” and he will be coming to your side of the pond in December! According to Gillespie, “Further research is clearly needed, much of which would be best accomplished by a trip to England, now scheduled for December. TIGHAR’’s ability to continue the investigation will depend upon your contributions to the Glenn Miller Research Fund. Please go ahead and contribute what you can now.”

The Earhart “faucet of fame” has been twisted shut. Time to unleash the Miller Mountain of Melodious Cash.

My only concern to date is that when I hit the Post Reply button, I get a little “Working” text box, which while reassuring, can take some minutes to morph into my actual post.

Something else odd as cropped up at TIGHAR – for the first time I can recall (meaning the last 20 years), TIGHAR is inviting its members to attend and even have input at a board meeting, in October at Gillespie’s Pennsylvania farm. The public portion of the meeting will even be videotaped so it can be sent to all current members, Gillespie added.

This is a rather extraordinary about-face for Gillespie. When I asked on the TIGHAR forums in July 2016 why we didn’t have an annual meeting so everyone could get to know everyone and discuss planning, upcoming activities, etc., this is what Gillespie said: “The concept is noble but the practicalities just don’t work for TIGHAR. Our membership is scattered all over the U.S. and, indeed, the world. Travel is expensive in both time and dollars. The Earhart 75 Symposium in 2012 was held in Washington, DC. – a good, easy-to-get-to location in the densely populated northeast of the U.S. It was open to everyone, not just TIGHAR members. Only a little over 100 people participated. Those who were there had a terrific time but we lost our shirt financially.”

So all of a sudden TIGHAR is having what amounts to an annual meeting that is not only free, but will be videotaped and made available to all members. All of a sudden Gillespie is at least going through the motions of giving members a say.

A pity I can’t attend to ask a few questions … a number of interesting ones come to mind …

At least you guys have SOME options. I seriously doubt it will ever make it to this side of the pond. 🙁

Regardless of the CGI, has anyone heard if this film will make it to the far side of the pond? I haven’t been able to find anything on a US release date.
