J Boyle said, The media has looked the other way for years, probably afraid of lawsuits, which are much more difficult for the plaintiff to win in the U.S.”
Yeah, you have to wonder why a small, single-issue non-profit needs two lawyers on its board of directors …
One word – publicity.
When TIGHAR initially got involved in 2007, Gillespie stated on their website that, “Recognizing the Lightning’s historical significance as the oldest surviving Eighth Air Force combat veteran, and its potential as an object of study in corrosion research, TIGHAR has made a commitment to champion the aircraft’s recovery and preservation.”
Nothing happened, of course, except the aircraft was left to further decay. It’s still there on the beach, still decaying.
Gillespie also said, “Contributions to the Maid of Harlech Memorial Fund go to help cover TIGHAR’s expenses in advocating for the responsible recovery and conservation of Lockheed P-38F 41-7677. If you wish, you can make your donation of $100 or more in the name of any World War II veteran. When the aircraft is recovered, a permanent memorial with the names of the donors and honorees will accompany the P-38 to the accessioning museum.
In the meantime, we’ll send you a handsome Certificate of Recognition acknowledging your support in helping us make sure this priceless relic is preserved for future generations.”
So for at least $100, you got a nice-looking piece of paper that, to date, signifies … nothing.
I don’t think TIGHAR has spent anything on the P-38 in years – indicating on its tax forms that it did so is just part of the accumulation of errors that these forms now represent.
dhfan said, “I fail to see how Gillespie can spend a single cent on the so-called Maid of Harlech.”
More than $9 million since 2000, and who knows how many million since 1985.
All have been failures to a greater or lesser degree.
Further obscuring things financial at TIGHAR, all links to their IRS 990 tax forms have recently been removed. If you search for their 990s on the TIGHAR website, you can find them. But only for 2013-2018 …
The few photos available seem to indicate in pancaked in pretty hard, hard enough to snap off the rudder and dislocate the engine and its housing. Sorry for the pilot.
I’m not sure anyone could persuade Dr. Felton at this late date, although there is always the assumed “truth in academia” bias that may help with that.
TIGHAR’s tax returns are no help in figuring out the status of that “project” – for its 2020 statement, it shows expenses of $72,097 on the Maid of Harlech, although there has been nothing discussed on the website, Facebook page or blog about that for the past year at least. The tax return also shows $0 being spent on TIGHAR’s Project Midnight Ghost, its so far failed search to find the remains of Nungesser and Coli’s aircraft. Although Gillespie just returned from another failed expedition to Newfoundland for that effort.
Curioser and curioser.
It seems like the wartime expediencies of “build it fast, build it cheap” are finally starting to catch up with a lot of WWII hardware – planes, ships, tanks, etc.
J Boyle said, “Its main function for years seems to have been a source of employment for its staff.”
It does seem that way at times. One other item of interest in the 2020 tax form is information on the “executive committee draw,” a $91,153 loan that TIGHAR made to Gillespie and Thrasher several years ago. The balance due stands at $180,670. Although there is no written agreement on this, the loan was “approved by [the] board or committee” according to the form. The executive committee of TIGHAR is its officers – Gillespie and Thrasher. A loan of this magnitude for such a small non-profit is another thing that gives one pause.
Gillespie is in his mid-70s, but as we speak, he is up in Newfoundland for the umpteenth time to look for signs of the White Bird, Nungesser and Coli’s ill-fated attempt to fly the Atlantic. The last funding appeal noted that ” Each day at the pond [expedition site] will cost $5,000 in helicopter time alone. Please donate what you can.”
Ah yes, Mr. Myers contribution to the Nikumaroro “hypothesis,” TIGHAR’s beloved guess … oddly enough, Myers’ theory has not been thoroughly excoriated by TIGHAR’s executive director in his closed-to-the-general-public forums. Yet. Give him time, Gillespie seems to be slowing down a bit.
Another guy, Colin Taylor, did join TIGHAR so he could post his own theory in the closed discussion forums, with predictable results. The latest is here: https://tighar.org/smf/index.php/topic,2245.msg44953.html#msg44953
I agree with J Boyle, this latest “I see something in the coral” is akin to the “I talk to dead people” line from the Bruce Willis film; without actually going there and looking, it’s basically wistful thinking. And Nikumaroro is not easy to get to. So you can stare at all the Google Earth photos you want, for as long as you want, it proves nothing.
On another note, TIGHAR continues its progress towards total darkness – UNLESS you are one of the chosen ones.
Gillespie plans to go back to Newfounland in June to look for Nungesser, Coli, and whatever may be left of their aircraft, known as the White Bird, for the umpteenth time. But you wouldn’t know that by looking on the TIGHAR discussion forums. Or on its home page. That little bit of info has only gotten to select members via an e-mailed TIGHAR Update. Curious. But then there are many curious things about TIGHAR these days …
JBoyle said, “they haven’t been sticklers for scientific protocol.”
No, they haven’t. At all.
It took me a longgggg time to realize that TIGHAR wasn’t about the scientific method and testing hypothses. It, or rather Gillespie, was all about using whatever “evidence” he had handy at the moment, to keep the donations and sponsorships rolling in. No other simple, reasonable explanation fits the available facts
mark_pilkington said: “I note that the reported departure above of Glickman, Paynter and Quigg from the 9 person Tighar board is not reflected on the Tighar website board listing?”
That’s correct, Mark. The website has gotten rather scattered and shipshod as of late (out-of-date information, broken links, etc.), presumably because Gillespie has been busy writing his latest Earhart opus. The unannounced board of directors changes were gleaned from the latest newsletter. It’s odd that the board now has no recognized scientific expertise among the members, as far as I can determine. But they’ve got two lawyers! Yep, that’s important …
As 2022 draws to a close, it’s a good time to look back at all of TIGHAR’s many accomplishments in aviation archaeology, aviation history, and historic aviation preservation during the past 12 months:
W don’t know how much TIGHAR spent to accomplish all of the above, since, as usual, they are several years behind on filing their required federal tax forms. At an average cost of $1,212 per day since 2000, though, we can safely assume it’s in the six-figure range.
Gillespie is apparently inching closer to his long-promised follow-on Earhart book, which he started working on in 2015 … One More Good Flight – the Amelia Earhart Tragedy, will be coming out sometime in mid- to late-2023, Gillespie announced in his latest newsletter. He took pains to point out that everyone who contributed at least $100 to his “Literary Guild” would get their signed copy. He also said something very curious: “TIGHAR will hold the copyright and receive all royalties. I receive no compensation other than my regular salary as executive director.”
But what is TIGHAR, if not Gillespie and his wife, who have been solely in charge of the enterprise for more than 30 years? What is the entity TIGHAR going to spend the royalties on, other than “executive compensation” and TIGHAR headquarters, which just happens to be Gillespie’s horse farm in Pennsylvania? The statement is self-serving, at the very least.
Hmmmm … it looks like TIGHAR may be selectively taking down videos from its YouTube channel. It seems like the presentation Gillespie gave at the New England Air Museum about the piece of aircraft aluminum he calls 2-2-V-1 has been deleted.
Of course, ALL of TIGHAR’s videos have comments turned OFF, so you can’t even ask what the heck is going on and is he finally ready to trash his decades old argument???
