Nope. Never increased in size. Never decreased in size. Fighter radar modules are always the same size because each radiating element is matched to the spectrum length of X-band. Its the same size even with the various PESAs. Its the same size—length of wave guide slot—even in all the slotted arrays. Its when you have longer wavelengths (wider band) that requires larger modules. The radiating element of a C-band radar is bigger than an X’s. The S band radiating element is bigger than the C-band. Goes down the line. If you see those UHF AESA, each radiating element is practically a Yagi fishbone type. Correspondingly, a Ku or Ka band element would be much smaller than an X-band element.
This is not dictated by semiconductor advances. This is dictated by microwave physics. Semiconductor advances would affect the back end processing systems only.
thx alot to grow education in basic physics to our mates, they still think that somes mmics will turn thier captor into a full AESA radar system, and without changing processors or programing and the million’s budget to program the frequency switching mode modules..
Yeah, sure…I can bet than when EF will have an AESA, the EF consortium will proclaim that AESA is the only decent radar for a fighter and the MSA is primitive…

There’s something to that…
About Eurofighter, the biggest problem at the moment is the partner nations themselves, Britain especially seeking ‘flexibility’ on their commited purchases and Tranche 3 in the air because of it, even before one considers the radar. I actually think EF/Captor’s proposed hybrid mech/AESA would be superior (at high angles) to RBE2-AESA, but it’s fairly certain Captor-E needs signifigantly more development than RBE2 at this point. (The last time HAF got their hands on Rafale it may still have had PESA, but AESA is in production for France now and the Swiss apparently tried it also, so Typhoon is definitely behind there… )
I think it’s reasonable that if Greece picks Rafale F4+HMS, for Thales’ GaN AESA to be available by 2015 or so, in the timeframe JSF is delivered to Turkey (without GaN unless budgets and schedules are to be totally destroyed). Given Captor-E and Tranche 3 is in a holding pattern for the moment, their migration to GaN (which will happen) seems likely to lag just for budget reasons (doubly since half the EF partners are interested in JSF, pinching funds for Typhoon upgrades/purchases), just when JSF is being deployed by Turkey.
Ordering Tranche 2 now because Eurofighter is in chaos, and upgrading later to AESA seems a waste of Greece’s money. But who knows? Maybe there could be an F2 ‘loaner’ until F3 is available so Greece doesn’t need to upgrade… In any case, I don’t think Typhoon’s higher thrust is really much of an issue: There is the higher thrust engine available on Rafale if necessary, but if they opt for Rafale, I honestly think HAF will make the same choice as France, and save on fuel/engine life.
re: Eurobonds, of course it only saves about 1-2% on financing… That amount of money could trivially be found by selling off state owned land or similar measures. I really think the value is lending more confidence NOW in the bonds of Greece and particularly other countries much worse off, by the mere fact that Germany/ECB is publicly contemplating such moves. I agree cutting military imports is a smarter solution if times are really that tough for Greece. Realistically, I don’t think Greece need be worried by Turkey in the immediate future in terms of a real war erupting – the factors about EU mentioned with Cyprus play into that. Greece is more interested in maintaining overall long-term deterrance with Turkey, so that in the future if they feel the temperature is rising, they won’t be starting from scratch.
yes, and the fact that the french hates the turcs, and they are the only one in europe that can provide an independente expedition force and aircraft carrier to help our greecs friends, the german haven’t any capabilities and the british are pro islamist turkey…
Politics and close for decenies greek french relationship ex “cyprus crise” in this region will keep away any weasel european advanture into the greek competition…

Here is a quick comparison of a video card released 10 years ago to one released last year. Both are Nvidia cards.
The new one is over 4000 x faster (100 million ops vs 420,000 million ops)
YIKES 🙂
don’t waste your time with this troll, he thinks that a old 90’s concept will be better than any 21th century technology.. even when they use thier joystick between thier legs on the Xbox, they got impression to fly the last generation fighter! the eurofighter 😀

It´s a “koopism”…
That text was made by Carlo Koop.
I am not one for going on a personal attack, but on these last day´s Air Power Australia has gone on a “rampage”, they have proposed the Raptor for the US Navy (grand idea, let´s pick the most expensive fighter EVER, and make it even MORE EXPENSIVE by making it “carrier compatible”, but hey, Peter Goon swears that this “simple” operation it´s only going to cost 230 million$!!!!), for the Marine Corps (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and now for the RAF.
And the argument it´s alway´s the same, the UBBER SU-35 his going to conquer earth! In the last two months APA have issued three interesting documents that mentions the RAF, or at least, it´s future backbone, the Typhoon. The first proposes to transform the Royal Air Force into a F-16 Viper ONLY force, deleting the entire Typhoon fleet because it´s too costly and over dependent on the ATA mission, then they sing “Halelujah” for DTI/Bill Sweetman latest ppt who highly praises the Eurofighter, and finnaly, this last document, the “Eurocanard/F35 his rubish, the Ubber Flanker his coming, buy a Raptor now”. WHAT?!!!!
In 1944 a certain General Anthony McAuliffe (commander of the 101st at Bastogne) made a famous remark that could very well apply to these latest documents coming from APA…
whatever who write the article, any mature people would conter with arguments to defend thier chapelle!

I would argue otherwise that America’s edge in Armed forces will continue till she has the highest defense budget. Look at the time when Soviets spent much more, the Russians were much closer to Americans in capability than they are now.
i would argue in the same way, the world leader in electronic defence raytheon is wrong with AESA with the world wide experts folowing, and the british with nil leader and budget are right!
uhmmmmmmmmmm bip bip bip

Rafale: United Arab Emirates want a much powerful engine because Rafale M88 doesn’t have optimal thrust for hot countries like UAE, said french paper “Les Echos”.
its in the snecma tube for 2011…. 😎

20 February 2009 – AESA for Eurofighter Typhoon
There were two blogs posted yesterday on the Aviation Week homepage, one on fighter specifics and one dealt with the question why Eurofighter Typhoon currently does not have an Electronic scanning antenna.Quoting renowned industrial experts like EADS-Peter Gutsmiedel and the “Father of ECR90” Professor John Roulston, the valid point was made: today the ECR90 Captor radar of Eurofighter Typhoon offers a comparable performance to current E-Scan radars, in some areas maybe better. And after integration of the Meteor missile, the Eurofighter Typhoon combination of Captor and Meteor will remain a leader in operational scenarios for quite some time.
The current E-Scan radars are at the beginning of their operational lives and often their weight, cost and performance don’t match the ECR90 Captor. These facts are sometimes forgotten in those marketing-driven discussions on E-Scan technology which are being promoted today by many.
Of course engineers in the Eurofighter programme are well aware of the new technology’s ultimate benefits and E-Scan is certainly not being disregarded. It will be introduced onto Eurofighter – but not quite yet.
Work on maturing this technology started years ago and is still being very actively pursued. After the DA5/Captor-E/Caesar flight campaign in 2007 the results were carefully analysed and the design has since been further refined. The objective remains to introduce E-Scan in due course – when we can offer something better than what is available today.
yes sir, the US DoD are spending billions dollars over AESA for years, and the dispatched europeans “parts builders” claims that old mech are still at same level!
