Great photos.
Thanks a lot for that Bill.
A few more photos from last Sunday’s work. As Blue_2 says, me and Ian were buried deep in Lindy changing a DF unit over.
Lindy’s bomb bay looking forward, full of fuel tanks and a HDU.
The aerial’s dome. This is the small round bump on top of the fuselage just at the back of the wings.
Putting the new unit in (photo by IanF).
Finally, I don’t suppose anyone can help. Andre tested some spare gyroscope units for the artificial horizon. They don’t seem to be fully working. Does anyone know anyone who might be able to advise on servicing them, or even to service them?
Thanks for that. Does anyone know where over Newcastle the 12:20 flypast will be?
Take a look at our latest entry on the Victor XL231 thread, there’s some shots of our starboard lamp on there.
And a link to that;

I don’t have the numbers to hand, but it looks very much like a Vulcan landing light to me. It’s also used on the Victor. I’m sure someone will be along soon with more detail.
Personally I’d like to see the approach Cosford used to have with the Axis machines, or Bruntingthorpe – keep them ‘live’ but don’t fly them ( intentionally :rolleyes: )
I know this has been covered a lot in the past, but just to add to the above point.
Even ground running an aircraft has some (very small compared to flying) risks. Parts wear out and require replacing, making the “artefact” slightly less original over time.
Not a problem for something relatively common (like Buccs, Vulcans and Victors, slight bias I know), but it’s nice to have a few purely static examples kept safe and turned off with no danger of engine fires, FOD damage or blown electrics. Not all of course, a static example will never impress people the way a living, breathing aircraft will.
Great photos Frances, can’t wait for the videos.
They aren’t the easiest thing to get to, we will need to dismantle the whole rear end of the engine to get to them, but they can be replaced, they are no similarities with other Speys unfortunately, it’s a 101 we need!
We have a Spey rollover stand and the manuals to disassemble them but obviously it would save a lot of time if we could just swap them with some in preservation that the owners have no intention of running!
As an update, we have been informed that these parts can be common with other Speys, so if anyone has a Spey of any mark they don’t plan to run, or knows of one, we’d very much like to hear from them. Thanks again to Peter for the above link.
Anyone know of one of these sitting around with its engines?

Or even one of these?

That is unfortunate Sven.. hopefully spares can be found..
Thanks Peter. It is unfortunate, but not insurmountable. The team have worked wonders to get this far, let’s hope she’s not silent for long.
What has happened to the engines Sven?
From one of the crew present during the inspection;
“Some of the HP stator’s on both engines have received damage due to high temperatures. Probably caused by blockage in one of/some of the fuel nozzles. It’s caused an uneven burn pattern and concentrated the heat in one area causing the damage.”
So either a new engine, or new HP stators are required. I guess there aren’t many Spey 101s in Canada?
A few more;

Aircraft outside were a bit tightly packed in;
It’s nice to see the local school embracing aviation;
There are harnesses and back padding beneath the pilots’ seats, though I’m not sure where you’d stick your legs with your back against that. It can’t have been very comfy.
Saying that, I very much doubt he’d have been allowed on, unless he’s a member TVOC ground crew and they were landing away from base.
Nice photos Phil, expecially the one of “TBAG-2” the landrover.
Interesting, thanks for those Peter.
Does anyone know if that 319 shot was taken soon after her repaint into grey undersides and the TFR added but before the ECM had been added, or was the ECM temporarily removed during her time with the OCU?
