RAF Typhoons replace Tornados on Operation Shader

It’s an account of the Typhoon’s first operational mission on Op Shader carrying MBDA’s Brimstone 2 missile – an extraordinarily effective weapons whose precision and small warhead allows attacks against fleeting targets in crowded areas without causing massive collateral damage.
So it’s not yet operational. No biggy. It won’t take long. Though the failure to provide a two-way datalink seems odd.
So which other weapons aren’t yet operational on Rafale, or haven’t been cleared.
While the AMRAAM held an advantage in every way to the Sparrow, Meteor only holds a range advantage over the AMRAAM.
Not so. Meteor betters AIM-120D AMRAAM in virtually every respect and in every parameter, with the exception of initial acceleration. That’s not a disadvantage, by the way, it’s key to the Meteor’s lethality.
AMRAAM’s motor burns until it’s out of fuel. You can’t do anything to alter that. It’s like an expensive firework.
The requirement was for a NEZ 2 x that of AMRAAM. They’ve achieved much better than 3 x the NEZ.
It’s not about range, it’s about being able to throttle the motor to save energy for the endgame. When Meteor gets close to its target it still has lots of fuel and potential energy to out-turn and out accelerate the threat. AMRAAM is coasting by the same phase, and is losing energy all the time.
Brimstone isn’t in service on Rafale yet, and I’m pretty sure that the big ‘Hammer’ won’t come in until F4 – I wonder how many of the other weapons aren’t yet cleared and in service. The twin gun pod, perhaps? Meteor?
What external stores are actually cleared on Rafale – not just fit-checked but flown, cleared and in service? I know it’s a long list!

Not a spotter’s day loadout! Actually the first Op Shader sortie carrying Brimstone on Typhoon. 30 January 2019.
2 x Paveway IV, 2 x Brimstone 2, 1 x 27 mm cannon, 1 x Litening III LDP, 2 x tanks, 2 x ASRAAM, 1 x AIM-120C. Nowhere close to the maximum, but enough for the current phase of Op Shader and minimising consumption of weapon carriage hours.
There is no such thing as a ‘new Tempest fighter’. Tempest is a collection of Technology Demonstration Programme, and the plastic model unveiled last year just one of a number of concepts. What it eventually looks like will depend on how the eventual requirement is drawn up.
