yes 10 years late according to the 1988 plan which was canceled after the callapsing of the USSR. Do you have a link about your €1.5 billion hole ?

“It’s the financial management of the programme by the DGA that’s causing the problem,” Dassault VP Gerard David in* Air Letter No.15466 dated 8 Apr 2004 following the discovery of a B1.5€ shortfall in funding for 2004/5 and the subsequent removal of a “Senior MoD Official in charge for the Rafale”.
Air Letter, Les Echos, 8 April 2004

    2)
Rafale M F1 may be more capable than an F-8E(FN) – but not by much, and certainly not to the extent you’d expect of a supposedly fourth generation fighter. Rafale M with Mica or Shar with AMRAAM? It’s a bit close to call. Rafale M or F/A-18……? Rafale M or F-4K……? See where I’m going. And Rafale M is firmly single-role.

    3)

The rafale C you are talking about is a F2 plane which has far more capabilities than the T1 eurofighters delivered to Spain, Italy, UK and Germany.

So it should be, it was ordered in 1999, and Rafale’s development has not been held up by Quadrinational wrangling. But is it ahead of where Typhoon will be at FOC? (AMRAAM, ASRAAM, EPW and Litening 3). Captor already outperforms RBE (as the Singaporeans found out), and you’d have to be an incurable optimist (or French) to believe that Rafale F2 will have anything like the DASS (“Reliability concerns spur Rafale audit: Obsolete Electronic systems in the Rafale fighter have prompted Minister Michele Alliot-Marie to order an audit of the programme Defence News, 9 February 2004”). And then you come to the MMI, where Rafale is at least half a generation behind what Typhoon has now.

As for F3. There are big holes in development funding, unless you think Singapore’s in the bag.

“The Greeks are losing interest and re-considering Rafale.”

If the Greeks go for another fighter (as they might) it will be a cheaper fighter, so it won’t be Rafale.

“The Swiss certainly don’t need them as the Gripen would make much more political and logistical sense.”

The Swiss want Typhoon (especially after Austria bought the type) but may be forced to go for a cheaper option, in which case Gripen is in with a shout.

“Turkey will stick to the JSF”

Yes, but it will still need a replacement for its F-4s and early F-16s long before the F-35 is available, and the Turkish Air Staff are certainly looking at Typhoon very seriously.

“i have not seen any reports that stated that the RSAF preferred the Typhoon.”

I have, both open source (see AFM) and closed.

An over-priced two engined fighter that’s cheaper than Rafale….

    Likeliest prospects include:

Singapore (leading contender, if the AF are given the choice), Norway, Greece, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, India, and Switzerland.

Denmark and the Netherlands are looking very ‘semi-detached’ as JSF partners, and Brazil may have opened up as a potential Typhoon market.

I can answer part of my own question, I think!

    XV201, XV203, XV204, XV213 C1K

    XV206 C1 (SF)

But any more information or confirmation would be appreciated!

If the USA exspects to export Apaches, MMAs and JSFs (and for customer nations not to go all protectionist on them) then it must also accept that it will have to buy kit from overseas when that kit is superior. Like the US101.

And, ‘Bring it on’, like the KC330, which is demonstrably the right aircraft for the USAF’s tanker requirement.

Curiouser and curiouser! I’ve just seen a photo of two (one refuelling the other) during trials in the states, both still in US markings, both with underwing Beech HDUs.

Thanks guys. I’ll see what I can do with a scan, but the photo is poor and much of the detail (eg the Dragon and dragon name) is barely visible, and I can only see it because I know it’s there!
