Though any F3 could notionally carry ASMP-A, the nuclear role does have specific requirements of the carrier aircraft, and I suspect that only two-seat F3s will actually be fully modified for nuclear delivery. Quite apart from hard-wired, nuclear certificated arming/fusing controls, it is usual for a nuclear armed aircraft to have particular pylons permanently installed (eg RN Sea Harrier FRS1 inner wing pylons, nuclear Jaguar centreline pylons).

    I would expect there to be a mini-fleet of nuclear Rafale B F3s, and a similar mini-fleet of Rafale M F3s.

    Arthuro,

Nice to know, but better in the Rafale news thread, perhaps?

Hence the 118 codes, I guess.

Still no answer on whether all of the F1s were delivered as LF1s…..

    Globalpress,

What on earth are you on?

    Anyone else (preferably someone sensible),

Who’s using the OSF sets? Navy? Air Force? No-one?

Do we know what the planned breakdown (B/C/M) will be with the next 60 aircraft order?

Didn’t that have to be placed by March to avoid a production gap, or has someone (Dassault? The Government?) funded the required ‘long lead’ items.

At even the current reduced production rate, the last of the currently funded batch will be DELIVERED by the middle of 2014, and will start final production at the end of 2012.

    Scorpion 82,

I like TMor’s list, but I’d like it more if some of the aircraft were described as belonging to EC 1/91 – instead of 39 appearing to be assigned to EC 1/7……

    Can anyone ‘fill the gaps’?

    Squadron………………..Base……….operational
    1/7 ‘Provence’……………St Dizier……FOC ??? 2007 (1)
    1/91 ‘Gascogne’………….St Dizier……mid-2010 (2)
    ?? ‘Normandie-Niemen’… ?……………?
    ?? ‘Alsace’
    ?? ‘Lorraine’
    ?? ‘Lafayette’
    ?? ‘Cigognes’
    ?? Ile de France

1 (SPA 15 Casque de Bayard, SPA 77 Croix de Jérusalem, SPA 91 Aigle à tête de mort)
2 (SAL 28 éléphant, SPA 79 tête de loup, BR 66 faucon égyptien)

I thought the OSF were ordered for the F1s and F2s, I knew that it was limited to 48 sets.

Is the F2-to-F3 upgrade process complete? Surely not?

Who gets priority for the OSF? The Navy? EC 1/91?

And what is an F3, in reality, as of now?

    It was supposed to have:
    1) implementation of all currently planned modes for the RBE2 radar – NO
    2) AASM capability – YES
    3) nuclear strike, with the ASMP or ASMP-A; NOT YET
    4) antiship attack with the Exocet or ANF; NOT YET
    5) reconnaissance with the Reco NG pod; ???
    6) DVI; LIMITED VOCAB COMPARED TO WHAT WAS PLANNED
    7) the helmet-mounted sight – NO
    8) Support for an improved tanker pack – ????

What is the plan as to what will happen to M2-M10?

Why are they grounded and stored? Are they really of no use at all, even for training?

Have their OSFs been cannibalised to allow a fleet-wide fit of OSF 1 across all F2 aircraft? If not, which aircraft do use the 48 Mk 1 OSFs that were delivered?

When does the next squadron stand up?

The advantage is that you could get passenger jets for £2m per aircraft, and freighters, with door, for £5m, and you could have them in weeks, while you wait for your A400M or C-17 production line slot.

Can we get the ‘we saved yo a$$es, boy’ nonsense out of the way first?

The debts owed for WWII go in BOTH directions.

We owe the US a huge debt of gratitude (not for supplying weapons, which was done partly for self interest) but for (belatedly) joining the fight against tyranny, and in doing so, shortening the war. Nazi Germany was doomed once it turned on the USSR, but without the USA the war would have lasted another ten years. The US entry into the war saved millions of Allied lives.

The US owe the UK (and the resistance movements in occupied Europe) an equal debt of gratitude for standing fast against Nazi Germany in Europe from 1939-42 (and for beginning the bomber campaign against the Reich), for ejecting German forces from North Africa, and for stopping the Japanese advance and then beginning to beat them back. All of this was achieved before the American war machine ‘got into its stride’. In doing so, we Europeans prepared the ground, and made eventual victory inevitable. You Americans then came on board and made it quick, as well.

Mutual respect and gratitude is owed on both sides.

On the F-35, nhampton’s original post claimed ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ because the first training unit will form in 2011. He quoted IOCs of 2012 for both the USMC and the USAF.

To achieve this, Gates is adding $500 million to the 2010 defense budget to increase the rate of flight testing.

Some cynicism about this is inevitable, and to express it is not trolling. (One could argue that an uncritical claim of great progress like yours might be deliberately intended to provoke a reaction, and is thus trolling itself).

Also, nhampton’s claim in his first post does not even accurately reflect what Gates said, so Sens’ post was not “threadsh*tting” as pigeon so eloquently put it, nor was it pointless – it pointed out a FACTUAL ERROR.

Nhampton said that IOC would be in 2012. Gates actually said 2013.

It’s worth questioning this claim (whether 2012 or 2013) since we’re already at 2009, and still no full production standard aircraft has flown. It could happen, but the coincidence of development and OT&E means that it is not without colossal risk.

I believe that there is light at the end of the JSF tunnel. It may be daylight. I think that it probably is daylight. But I’m not yet completely convinced that it isn’t an oncoming train.

The Orkneys have always been part of the British Isles, and are about ten miles off the Scottish Coast. The Faroe Islands are closer to the UK than the Falklands are to Argentina.

There are two sides to Argentina’s claim to the Falklands. One is based on geographic proximity. It’s a poor claim, as the Falklands are a blo.ody long way from Argentina, and are almost as close to Chile. 300 miles or so, IIRC.

The other side is based on history. An equally poor claim.

The UK has exercised sovereignty over the Islands since 1833. Argentina had a settlement on the islands and claimed sovereignty from 1816 (when it gained independence from Spain). So we have 17 years of occupation and claims to sovereignty versus the UK’s 176 years of de facto control and almost 300 years of British settlement.

That would be the argument if these were barren lumps of rock without a real population of their own.

But that is not the case, and there is a community of Falkland Islanders who have lived on the islands for generations, and their will is to be a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, and they do not accept Argentina’s claims, which are colonialist and illegitimate.

Even the use of Spanish place names (eg Malvinas) is considered offensive in the Falkland Islands. Argentina needs to grow up and recognise the reality of the situation. It has no legitimate claim to the Falklands based on geography, history, nor the right to self determination of the island’s population.

When there’s a name, can one of the French posters post it up, please. I have a couple of mates flying Rafale M at the moment and don’t know their NoK, so haven’t been able to find out that they are ok.

(Reuters) – Two French Rafale fighter aicraft from the carrier Charles de Gaulle crashed in the Mediterranean on Thursday during a test flight, the military said.

One pilot has been rescued, another is still missing.

The Rafale, made by Dassault Aviation, is France’s most advanced fighter. Brazil has been negotiating to buy the aircraft, which would be its first export order.

The accident took place about 30 km from the southwestern city of Perpignan. A spokesman for Dassault had no comment.

“It was a training mission, not an operational mission. The search is continuing for the second pilot,” an armed forces spokeswoman said. A rescue vessel, a civilian helicopter and two military planes were taking part in the search.

Happened about 1800 hours, local, and takes the Aeronavale down to 15 Rafales in service.

Doesn’t look good for the pilot of the second jet, I’m afraid (relatively close to shore, in the Med, not the cold, cold Atlantic, and with lots of on scene SAR assets – if he’d survived, you’d guess they’d have found him fairly quickly), but fingers crossed anyway.
