How is it truncated when I explicitely outlined that the radar was named among the other sensors in relation to the “quality of sensors” statement?
The point is the eval report isn’t particularly specific here. And even if they found the RBE2 “better” overall, it doesn’t mean it’s necessarily better in all aspects. The RBE2 surely has its merits such as the advantages related to electronic scanning, AG modes or mode interleaving. There might be more strengths than those viz a viz Captor. But all this still doesn’t mean that Captor has not its own merits as well, some of which are hardly deniable incl. range performance, NCI and angular coverage and likely higher resolution at higher gimbals in particular. And didn’t the MN jocks admire Captors better suitability for AA engagements in their response to the Italian claims published in early 2012? Didn’t AdA blokes simularly claim that the RDY offers some advantages in AA either?
The key point is that the captor is an excellent M-scan radar. No question about that. But it’s not a magic M-Scan radar
Raw Range and angular coverage are excellent and can give an edge over an E-Scan radar… as long as the tactical situation remains simple.
But this advandage starts to shrink as soon as the number of tatgets the captor has to deal with increases (unlike an ESA). And it’s even more so if it has to counter modern ECM at the same time. In such conditions the pilot has to choose between angular coverage/range and tracking capability. He can’t have both. Tracking targets which separate on the horizontal and vertical planes in opposite directions is a nightmare for any M-scan radar. Captor is no exeption.
If the swiss weren’t particularly impressed by the captor in 2008 it’s probably because it was not that different from the APG-73 and perhaps even lagging in the ECCM area compare to the F-18C radar ?
Airbus Defence – just as EADS stands for European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company N.V.
It isn’t a US firm, & like other European companies, uses English spelling for English words.
“Airbus Defense” could almost be the french spelling then 🙂
I have a couple :-
Captor M is like a Valve Amplifier, it sounds better than transistor amps, but is an older tech..
I see the captor M more like a 4 hrs VHS tape with the dolby logo vs a blue ray 😀
Some times the newer versions have higher spec in some areas but lose in other areas in i.e. Captor M case it is scan angles that only a swashplated design can compensate for….
Side antennas can do the job too.
And the rafale doing big lames and smoking? Dunno what jsr smoked to claim that…
Especially since it’s probably one of the fighter that has the best IR signature managment with the engine surrounded by composite materials and cold air funnel, engine exaust made of composite “cold flaps”:eagerness:
I only mention UAE report that Rafale is not powerfull enough for loaded operations in high temperature environment. and you can see from the video the amount of smoke coming out from afterburners and very high flames. That airshow is at small place
you cannot see any big afterburning flame or smoke. that is surplus power.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FvezCyw1HY
Look, they made all the high temperature/heavy load tests. And they found out that the Rafale was powerfull enough. Period.
BTW, In case you missed that, the French Air Force has operated the Rafale in heavy configurations in actual war missions in Tchad/Mali which are not Countries known for they cold weather.
Qatar operates the F-16? Have a pic of that?
France has been Qatar’s primary supplier for fighter aircraft. They did operate the Hunter way back when. I see no reason why they would change now.
No they don’t.
They only have 12 Mirage 2000-5.
People keep confusing Qatar with UAE
Besides a new fighter they also want more than 12 this time.
It is difficult to make a direct comparison between the two. The F-35 is a far more complex and ambitious program than the original Gripen, of which the Gripen NG is merely an upgrade.
I would put the Gripen NG program closer to the F-15SA in terms of its complexity.
Agreed,
The Gripen NG is an upgrade of an existing aircraft using an allready in service engine
the F35 is a devellopement from A to Z of 3 airframes (2 operating from navy ships) and 2 different engines at the same time
Who told you such BS? They fly everyday at Al Dhafra…
Besides, we are talking about the UAE here. They fly their Mirage as they drive their ferrari… that is everyday
From a US perspective, F-111, B-1A/B and MV-22. Followed shortly behind by the F-35. But then again, what new aircraft isn’t controversial? F-16 and F/A-18 both had their periods of controversy, and both turned out to be widely successful aircraft in their realms.
Isn’t the B-2 even more controvertial than the B-1 ?
I would also add, for political reasons:
Saudi tornado
Iranian F-14
Austrian Eurofighter
argies/iraki super etendard
Kfir
J-15
Not really the case. They’re not as Pro-British as many think. Anyway that’s another story and veeeeery off-topic! 😀

that partucular one about how “good” the 80ies british “sport” cars used to be is just priceless 😀
One of the key future enhancements for the Eurofighter combat aircraft has moved a step closer to becoming reality, after BAE Systems performed a trial installation of an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar with a test example of the aircraft.
“Working in partnership with the Euroradar consortium, test aircraft IPA5 is undergoing a modification and upgrade programme in order to support the E-scan development programme,” says BAE, which has released a first image of the combination in work at its Warton site in Lancashire.
Is that the swashplate version ?
There’s been nothing mentioned regarding why, I learned this from Nat Makepeace. If I’d hazard a guess why; IPA units tend to be at air shows performing displays most of the time but at the moment the IPAs are doing a lot of testing especially with Nat, and going by his recent tweets, other Test Pilots as well as himself have been having a lot of meetings regarding these testing phases. He also hinted at IPA5 being in the hanger with an E-Scan. So, I guess IPA units are too busy to go to air shows at the moment. Other frontline Typhoons, who knows. That’s my guess anyway.
Speaking of testing with Nat Makepeace.
“Hopefully off on some 2 vs 1 air-to-air testing at P1e (b) shortly…..”
Are you kidding me,
UK, Germany, Spain and Italy, all 4 eurofighter operators could fly a typhoon to paris in less than 1 hour. Don’t tell me they can’t bring a single operational Typhoon to one of the biggest Airshow in Europe and fly a demo during the 2 public days ?
That’s really sad.
Initially it were the French until their diversion
You mean all the others for not accepting immediatly French legitimate conditions ?
Main cost increases for the Rafale have been due to
1- production delays due to political choice
2- Addition of new capabilities
Eagle1, sore loser? If you’re referring to me as being a sore loser then it’s quite a pathetic attempt coming from someone that showed to being a “sore winner” that let yourself ultimately being banned from Starstreak for unnecessarily posting.
Is there any single french guy who has not been banned from this forum ?
I sure was for no other reason than being an evil french :dev2:
