Conveniently Khadafi was shot dead. I mean conveniently for a bunch of french politicians. Good for them that Khadafi didn’t have the opportunity to tell how they financed their political parties for the last presidential campaign.
Nic
Well you don’t necessarely have to search outside libya to find people who didn’t want the colonel to speak too much.
It is equally amusing to note that the short moment arm configuration was considered compromised in terms of control surface placement compared to the optimum for a delta canard configuration :diablo:
SCNR 😀
you mean that they failed to understand how to integrate it properly.
just for fun :

The Bramos seems to fit if you don’t plan to use the hook 😀
But overall, 100,000+ hours flown ‘vs’ 60,000+ hours flown & they’re not just up there going round in circles, do the math
All Flight hours are not equal.
how many Flight hours in actual war missions ?
how many Flight hours in bad conditions (sea/sand)?
how many Flight hours with really heavy external load (> 5T) ?
how many carrier take off / landing ?
those French target claims
Remind me of Desert Storm claims that were totally inflated. 500 targets in 280 sorties, wow! I guess a bicycle counts as a target now.
do the maths :
that’s 525 potential targets destroyed by the hot missiles only (ie, no counting the rockets and gun kills)
and manpad/RPG squads using bicycles sure count as targets :p
BTW all French helicopters engaged in Libya are equiped with thermal imagery systems for targeting and battle damage assesment.
So I’ve no doubt that the 500+ targets destroyed figure is accurate.
The Gazelle crews are very experienced. For the last 10 years, they have demonstrated their skills in Afghanisatn and Ivory coast.
Back to the article, He never talks about spanking or massive kill ratios he states the aircraft is vastly superiour to the current inventory.
Come on ! How could he conclude that the typhoon is vastly superiour if the kill ratio hadn’t been vastly in favor of the Typhoon ?
otherwise, I agree with the rest of your post
oh dear that chip on your shoulder must be very heavy!:)
Are the Rafale camp so hard done by that they have to have a whinge on this?
you bet ! 😀
probably….
LMRaptor’s point is that a senior RAF officer is saying to journalists whose publications are for the Indian domestic readership, that Typhoon is demonstrably better than the SU30.
The other examples don’t fit into the “why would they jeopardise a multi billion dollar defence contract by lying” camp though….
Well, would you say that the RAF is lying since 2007 then ?
off course not. So why Dalton hasn’t followed the RAF com policy this time ?
So when a french air force officer talks about the Rafale whacking the Typhoon, it is outrageous leaks, and unproffessional attitude but when the RAF air chief does the same about the su-30mki, it is just a virtuous will to spread the truth.
BTW, I don’t see any british forumers (edit, apart from Lindermeyer) asking for the rules of engagement and dismissing the results because DACT training can’t be seen as trustworthy.
He was clearly asked by Indian journalists.
Sure, but that’s not the first time they’ve asked. Conversely, that’s the first time they get such an answer.
The shift in the RAF com attitude is obviously due to the MMRCA contest.
Ignoring the headline
I dont see in Daltons remarks anything suggesting massive victories for the typhoon over the Indians.
Yes he does state that technology wise the typhoon is ahead of what they currently use (and we would be shocked if it wasnt) but also goes onto state that no slight is intended.
He seems to me to be emphasing training and teamwork above all else. sadly whattever reasoned and rational statements he has or will make will be lost in all the willy waving provoked by the headline.
Edited to add
” Well they lost” seems more of a throw away remark than a formal statement, and one which I suspect was not intended for print.
what about :
“Nothing that India has got is anything anywhere near this (the Typhoon). I would say that absolutely. This airplane is phenomenally different in both performance and technology in anything they (IAF) got right now,” he said.
Not intended for print neither ?
I was at LeBourget Airshow in 1997. And as far as i remember, the 2 demos that impressed me :
1- Su-37
2- Rafale B + 2 scalps + 3 2000L tanks.
damned that was 14 years ago 😮
He is telling the Indians what they already know.
If the Indian already know, why does he feel the need to remind them the results ?
Imho, Not a smart move.
BTW, I thought RAF pilots were never talking about exercises results :diablo:
that’s interesting.
With the MMRCA heating up, it seems that the legendary british gentleness is fading away 😀
Don’t forget that an S-300 battery will probably be guarded by a number of Pantsyr/Tunguska/Shilka and the odd AAA gun and random platoons armed with Iglas. This makes a low approach to the target quite a challenge because the attackers will be in range of so many relatively cheap weapons.
The short range defenses of the libyan Al-Joufra Air base didn’t manage to shoot down any of the 12 scalps fired by the Rafale and Mirage 2000D.
Scalp is very stealthy. it is not that easy to shoot it down
