Can one of you rafale ooglers tell me what the empty weight on the M is and how much heavier it is than the C? Also it would be nice to have a source. Thanks much.

    < 10,500 Kg

    Source :
    http://www.defense.gouv.fr/content/download/154759/1569099/file/BEAD-air-D-2009-010-A.pdf

You have to do some maths based on the information provided by this crash report.

First you have the take off weight of the Rafale M22 : 20300 Kg

Then you have the complete loadout of the Rafale M22 at take off:

    • 6700 Kg of F44 fuel = 6700 Kg
    • 1 x equiped pilot = 90 Kg
    • 2 x mica IRX = 224 Kg
    • 2 x Mica EMX = 224 Kg
    • 6 x 250 Kg exercice munitions = 1500 Kg
    • 2 x RPL711 drop tanks = 240 Kg
    • 2 x LM 3466 missile launchers (wing tip) = 114 Kg
    • 2 x LM 3066 missile launchers (fuselage) = 122 Kg
    • 2 x AT730 triple bomb adaptor > 240 Kg
    • 2 x PU 708 Universal pylon > 240 Kg
    • 2 x PE 156A2 Universal pylon > 260 Kg
    • 30 Liters of H-537 hydraulic fluid =25.5 Kg
    • 20 Liters of O-156 engine oil = 19.9 Kg
    • 3 Liters of Coolanol 25R = 2.7 Kg

With all that you can estimate an empty weight of about 10,500 Kg (with engine oil, hydrolic/cooling fluids and the 2 wing tip missile launchers)
Note : I might have underestimated the weight of the Universal pylons and the triple bomb adaptor in my calculation as I have no solid source for their actual weight (heavier pylons would mean lighter empty weight)

I wonder, though, if the Mirage F1 is really as suitable for adversary role? Sure French Mirages were modernized somewhat, but avionics set is still very old even compared to KAHU Skyhawks.

Well the Mirage F1 is a mach 2 fighter an that can be interesting for agressors. It can also receive modern avionics upgrades like the MF2000 MLU

Would you mind write down what he wrote in French?

    What Haloween said there :
    http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?142216-Rafale-2017-2&p=2397763#post2397763

“We are at mach 0.9.. 0.95 going supersonic….top… we are supernonic… let’s check the fuel… the fuel flow is quite high, about 300-350 Kg/min…
Now we are at mach 1.7… the plane is a little bit heavier than usual (ie slower to maneuver) but I can bank left or right, pitch up and down… can do a roll while remaining supersonic… It can be piloted very well in almost the whole flight envelope …
This is the type of tests we do to validate the plane during a flight trial.
Now we climb down a little bit… I set down to 100 feet and the plane will go to 100 ft by itself…. Voila… [backseater : “This is crazy !!!”] …now we are at 100 feet and 450 knots, ground speed…[backseater : “This is crazy…”]… So, we were in what we call – radar automatic terrain following –

    After the A350

Top, [rolling] … I go to the hard limit but in this configuration we are protected for G-load at 5.5 g so if I pull the stick like a bull I can’t go over that.
    Let’s do a high G combat barrel roll… [backseater : AYYYYE-YAI-YAI-YAI-YAI-whoooaaa]”

73 new Rafale F4 ?? Does that mean the procuring number of domestic Rafale will be increased (from 225 to 253 or so) ?? Or some of the new Rafale F4 will come from the upgrading Rafale F3R ??

    No.
AFAIK (Air Fan 450), the last 28 rafale of the tranche 4 and the 45* Rafale of the tranche 5 should be delivered with the new F4 standard hardware package (standard F4.2)
The previous 147 Rafale F3R (152 -5 lost) will get a soft retrofit (standard F4.1)

The F4.2 aircrafts will get hardware enhancements for the Radar, Spectra, OSF and the cockpit.

    * Note that this is not a confirmed number. Tranche 5 could also be 50 aircrafts to compensate for the 5 lost a/c…time will tell…

As confirmed by Air Fan magazine, it will be directionnal.

There are a lot of new interesting features in this F4 standard.
There is also the development of the AASL, a 100 Kg/100 Km multi sensors A2G weapon which could be included in the F4. The MBDA smartglider is apparently a good candidate for that job:

    http://www.mbda-systems.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/SmartGlider-CADCAM-view-%C2%A9-MBDA-Copie.png

And also the THALES BAT-120 LG a 35 kG class LGB that can be carried in bundle of 3 on light hardpoints

It is also worth noting that 73 new Rafale F4 will be delivered to the French forces from 2021

So there is no concern to have if this is a point known for 15 years and already addressed.

the problem is, the sky color during the era of model 2001 and 2002 were usually grey. This is China we’re talking about and when those reveals and flights took place, there were always smog or cloudy weather

The light in a Cloudy weather is even more blue because the red and yellow light from the sun is filtered by the cloud layer.

The perceaved color of a object is the product of 3 functions:

1- the spectrum of the illuminant (which can be a mix of primary and secondary sources)
2- the spectral reflectance of the object (the “color” you are looking for)
3- the sprectral response of the observer (camera sensor or human eye)

Then the brain or the Image signal processor must perform a white point to neutralize the whites (this requires the aptitude to recognize white or grey objects is the scene).
This can be very complicated because you can have grey objects illuminated by different light sources in the same scene.

Anyways, what you are asking for, is the spectral reflectance of the J-20’s paint (a perfect neutral grey would be a flat curve with the same reflectance for all wavelengths of the visible spectrum).
This is impossible to know from a picture because you don’t know the 2 other functions nor how the camera did its white point.

If you want to know the “real color” (ie the spectral reflectance) of an object you need a calibrated source and a calibrated spectrometer like this guy :

    What say ye?

    Dark Green or Grey

On the picture it is dark cyan, which would be consistant with a dark grey paint reflecting the sky color.

    hello studly.
this might surprise you, but most air forces in the world don’t engage in combat and just need an air policer.

I know, I just though it was funny to have “best fighter” and “peacetime” in the same sentence 😉

BTW, the Gripen C was described as unsatifactory for Air policing due to weak aircraft endurance and performances by the Swiss eval…

best air superiority: want to say Typhoon but probably F-15
    best a2g: F-15
    best multirole: F-15
    best for peacetime: Gripen
    best value for money: Su-35
best for most air forces: Gripen
    best naval: Rafale
    best looking: Rafale, su-35 tie

“General, we are going to war !”
The General : “thanks god, we have the best fighter for peacetime !”

    Wait, what ? [ATTACH=CONFIG]251374[/ATTACH]:very_drunk:
