The bottom line is that the rafale had a chance to prove both WVR superiority and BVR and it failed at both.
What are you talking about. The rafale has nothing to prove against the F-22.
Dassault’s never claimed that the rafale was superior to the raptor. Rather the contrary in fact…
On the other hand Lockheed and the USAF do not miss an occasion to boast the F-22 air dominance against anything flying on the planet.
Until now, the F-22 seems to deserve its Air dominance title for BVR fights.
But as far as ACM fights against rafale are concerned, I think “dominance” might be a bit exaggerated. “Slight advantage” would describe better what eventually happened.
i’ll let you pick the source you like
keyword “cooperative jamming” ALQ
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=UFP&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=%22cooperative+jamming+%22+ALQ&btnG=Search
its also called cooperative tactics and blinking jamming is cooperative jamming so i read, i guess there would be a few more terms meaning the same thing
I repeat TMor question :
Where did you read that he (the DSI journalist) isn’t aware of that ?
Trident
a towed array isnt really comparable, it sounds similar to the mald-j stand-in jammerits a blog post from someone that doesnt know that cooperative jamming and decoy dispensing is used on the f-16.18.35.22 that i know of and probably the f-15 too
What you call a “blog” IS the official website of the DSI magazine.
BTW, do you realize that you are talking about an article published in one of the most famous french defense magazine…an article that you haven’t even read?
su-27
mirage 2000
F-14 in vf-1 colors
Bae hawk
Yes even if you are logged in you get to read the posts when people quote them, which is most of the time.
Nic
Well, if everybody was using the ignore list when it is needed, trash posts quotes would disappear too 😉
Thanks to ONE person who has been trolling every rafale thread lately. Do I need to name him? You can’t read a thread where the Rafale is mentionned without stumbling on his trolling.
Nic, feel free to use the “ignore option” of this forum.
There is no airbrakes on the Rafale. Any retarded factoid you would like to add?
Nic
No need to be rude.
This thread starts to smell like strategy page. And it’s not good.
nice, indeed.
Too bad the video stop in the middle of the negative G turn 🙁
correct. It was the M16 (F2)

Hopfully it was a rafale M. I doubt the landing gear of a rafale C would have survived such a wild trip
It would have been interresting to see how the canopy was broken by the ejection seat.
It is also worth noting that
1- the aircraft was armed with real mica missiles (brown and yellow strips). 😮
2- IIRC the pilot did use its hook (as can be seen on the picture below) but unfortunately, the arresting cable of the runway had just been removed for maintenance.

I especially like the part where the guy who wrote the Eurofighter Gmbh article lectures the french air force about the science of propaganda 😀
He definitely has a great sense of humor :p
it also makes me wonder who is the best porkies teller :dev2:
Here is Eurofighter’s view of the events in the UAE. The following text is a copy paste from the new official “Eurofighter World” magazine.
I hope this is not the article promised by Jon Lake. If so, I would be highly disappointed.
based on what?
based on the fact that only France would/will really provide help about nuclear sub, aircraft carrier, space tech and a permanent seat at the security council.
For once, the (usually limited) political weight of France has some relevance in the deal.
You have to realize that this deal is not only about the planes.
A price reduction of almost 2 billion dollars is beyond belief as we are talking about 36 fighters only which is a very small order in comparison.
That’s a 32% discount but if you think about it they have just aligned the price in euro on the price in dollar : ie they have just replace the €6.2 billion quote by a $6.2 billion one
The dollar is so weak that you can’t compete against a US plane unless you cut your margin to compensate this artificial financial advantage for the USA on the export markets.
Any way you cut it such an engagement wouldn’t make sense, unless to train the F22 pilot how to fight a RBE2 PESA equipped plane with no OSF.
I said it all along, it doesn’t make sense.
Nic
Well in a training engagement against a fighter you don’t know , that makes sense :
– ok let see if we can take on a raptor with the RBE-2
–> results : we can’t.
conclusion of the training : next time we have a raptor in front of us, we keep the radar off.
Funny, when a French pilot writes something in a blog it is taken as the Absolute Truth, when a Brazilian pilot gives his personal opinion in a blog it is “pathetic arguments”.
This is not excatly the same thing ;
On one hand we have a french active squadron leader talking at an official press conference about an exercise he actually took part in. The fact that this interview is reported in the blog of a famous french defense journalist (and not just an anonimous fan boy blog) is also relevant to assess the value of this info .
On the other hand we have a respectable but retired FAB pilot who gives his opinion about a selection process about which he has only very limited official insight (if any). And he bases a big part of this opinion on 25-30 years old bad experiences he had with one of the contender.
Well, think what you want, but I prefer to take his opinion with a pinch of salt.
It is also funny that after complaining for years that Rafale often won the “technical evaluation” but lost “due to politics”, now the situation is reversed in Brazil! The FAB puts Rafale last, and it’s the politicians that put it first.
AFAIK, the situation is not reverse.
Where did you see that the rafale lost the technical evaluation ?
The FAB said that all 3 aircrafts meet the technical requirements.
Thus, there is no technical winner or looser for the FAB.
Price and TOT should not have been part of the technical evaluation and shouldn’t have been taken into account in any FAB report, leaked or not. That is why Jobim asked a new report with only what was asked to the FAB (ie no ranking based on price and TOT or whatever was not the FAB business in the first place)
Rafale is a fantastic aircraft, I like it a lot! However it seems very expensive, and even more so if they want all the ToT.
rafale developement represents about €10 billions and 20 years of advanced research and expensive trials in all relevant aerospace fields :
– composite materials airframe
– aerodynamics and associated FBW system
– jet engines
– esa radars
– esa ECM
– BVR missiles
– stand off cruise missiles
– multispectral optronic
– sensor fusion
– RCS reduction (I didn’t say stealth 😉 )
– carrier operation compatibility
That’s a lot of known how which are ALL in the rafale bag. AFAIC, I doubt that Brasil would get everything…
The only other contender which can match this set of TOT, is the F-18E, but the US congress will never accept TOT of this magnitude (especially not on missiles, radar and ECM)
