The actve RBE-2 will enter service in France when the meteor will be ready (around 2012)

This contract is more to secure export order of the rafale I think.

providing additional detail that actually supports the original thesis

What thesis ? The thesis that french fought powerfull ennemies (actually the most powerfull on earth at these times) for hundreds years and, won or lost many bloody battles.

Sure, that makes them all cowards.

Consider this, their best military units are actually the Foreign Legions, and the reason why? No French citizen are allowed.

You need to learn a bit more about the Legion my friend.

    Back to the topic :

I think the RAF strengh is its upgrading programs (jaguar GR3, harriers FA2/GR9, tornado GR4)

The french aircraft are also ugraded but this is less intensive and radical (except for the mirage 2000-5 and super etendard)

About the capabilities of each air force, i think they are very complementary

France is a second-rate country in electronics (though why producing your weapons “locally” makes your air force better or worse is a mystery to me).

May be because you don’t know anything about BVR missiles and ECM technologies ?

Ask yourself why the Iraki super530D performed quite well against Iranian F-4 and F-14 but were unable to shot down a single aircraft during GW1.

Advanced BVR missiles are political weapons, they can give a country a global superiority over its neighbours. if you make these missiles yourself, you control your political choices, in 3 words, YOU ARE INDEPENDANT. If you buy these missiles from an other country, you may be a political puppet of this country (no missiles and your mighty airf orce become as usefull as a charter compagny).

The french military budget is smaller than Britain’s (something like $20B vs. about $30B, and trivial compared to US budget). The french haven’t won a war by themselves in centuries. Hell, they are the only country that lost TWO wars to the Italians. In Desert Storm, they barely scraped together a few thousand soldiers to go to the Gulf. Their aircraft refused to fly missions outside Kuwait because they were worried it was too dangerous (in other words, they refused to fly any real missions against any real targets, given that the Republican Guards were positioned just north of Kuwait, and given that strategic targets were obviously outside Kuwait).

In case you’re still wondering: France does NOT have the best air force in Europe. No Way, No How. Impossible.

Please try to read some real History books instead of anti-french-revisionist- for-commercial-purpose (buy my anti french T-shirt and mugs) web sites :p

PS : Kovy, do I know you? (C6)

there is only one kovy on the web 😀

anyway for those who wonder, here is a more detailed list I got : (feel free to correct my numbers)

These are the online fighters. We stock some aircrafts for attrition, and other are use at the CEAM or CEV for trial.

for exemple, 30 mirage 2000-5 are in 2 active squadrons, 2 are at the CEAM and 5 are stocked.

idem for the mirage 2000D, we have 83 of them (If I’m not wrong) but only 60 are online (in 3 squadrons)

    etc…

However, that does not mean that we have have 30 mirage 2000-5 and 60 mirage 2000D ready for combat H24 (because of usual maintenance)

the raw figures are that the RAF has 7 E-3D AWACS and 100 F.3s that have had the CSP/JTIDS etc. upgrades. I think that’s quite a tidy package to call upon, even compared to France’s 4 E-3F AWACS and 40 M2K-5.

And what about the 3 E-2C, the 10 rafale F1 and the 80 mirage 2000 C/B rdi + super 530D ? why don’t you count them in the french air defence list ?

The RBE-2 cannot track or TWS 40 targets. It simply has a special SA mode that “displays” 40 targets, including those being searched

It can track 40. This is one of the main advantage of a phase array radar over a mechanical antena.

does that mean it can control 4 Mica-radar and 4 Mica-IR at same time ?

I guess not : a mica IR uses a data link channel too.

In my mind, it works this way : you can engage 8 targets in 2 salves. First you attack 4 targets…then you wait wor your mica (EM or IR) to go active and then you can attack the 4 remaining targets (and the system calculate 4 other interceptions data if there are more targets)…etc…

the 4 targets of the RBE-2 are not a limitation of the radar but of the number of data link tracks

    the RBE-2 can engage 8 targets simultaneously…but only 4 with data link….
