Is someone able to tell me what numbers would be found on the Perspex canopy? I have found one piece with some number son, and wondered if it would clarify if P9503 was flying at the time with a flat-sided or fully-bubble canopy? The numbers are divided into stamped and hand scribed and are: PERSPEX T140X stamped into the plastic, and then X56133 and RN7542 inscribed by hand after that. Will up-load a pic this evening. This particular part has the numbers on a flat area, above which it starts to bulge out…which makes me think it could be a later bubble type…alternatively, I suppose this could come from the front screen where it is held in by the frame and bulges out? It also has the remains of some brown paint on it.
Excellent info, thought it might be that. I’ve since found a few other pieces, but not many. This evening we cleaned and sorted a few more piles, and found plenty of glass and perspex pieces. Interestingly some of the perspex has the very obvious evidence of burning… yellowing and bubbling at the edges. Very recognisable from my days in the film industry.
Regarding the seat, and with a mind to authenticity, how much does anyone know about the construction method of the compressed paper type, and therefore any suggestions about the potential to recreate such today? I fully understand that the seat is an extremely complicated piece to make.
Versuch, Concave part is part number: 30034 253 3. I thought 30034 referred to Inst panel area?
Minimans, Yes, we have lots of .303, but okayed by MOD…and students are not permitted to play with them. Will be looking at a way to remove the ‘insides’ at some point, as whatever anyone says, I’m not comfortable with any form of potentially explosive items.
Ian, thanks for the info re: Sliders, your images are very helpful. I’m hoping we will find at least one more in the boxes of parts, but am not holding out hope. They don’t look too difficult to make new though either.
Another hour parts cleaning, will post more pics this evening, found the +8 Boost Gauge face and the centre cap for the Turning Indicator among other things.
Vulture, there’s a frame on ebay that may be worth looking at. Seller doesn’t know what it is from, but you might get lucky? Item number is111566408697
Obviously the pegs are gone, two questions; do you think it is possible to carefully bend the slider back to straight? And is it possible to attach new pegs by drilling out the old? If all of this is possible, does anyone have an original they can take some vernier calipers to and give me accurate length and thickness? Many thanks
I came across the book by chance a couple of years ago and was left stunned after I read it. One of the most amazing life stories, in fact, so much so that I wrote to the publisher and asked them to forward a message to Louis for me. I got a reply which was something special. Haven’t seen the film yet, but judging by how profoundly Angelina Jolie was moved by the story too, am hoping that it has been given the justice it deserves. Am looking forward to seeing it.
Thank you for your comments, this is certainly an interesting time in the project. We are also about to start a parallel cockpit project which will serve as a flight training aid when complete… More to come as that happens. It will be simple initially, but will have scope for as much detail as we want.
Lots of parts come from the wings going by the serial numbers
