    Barton Crash site

According to my colleague, all the wreckage was removed by the RAF, although some bits were kept by some of the locals.Nothing was found when the colliery was demolished and with the housing developments, unlikely that anything still exists.

The Grid references on the NEAM site appear to be incorrect, the approx crash site OS ref is NZ399535, the Ryhope colliery site has been redeveloped with housing & a Golf course.
Use http://www.dmm.org.uk, mining, colliery maps, ryhope colliery,1950s detailed map, this is a map of the colliery, the embankment (where parts of Halifax came to rest) can be seen to the left of the centre of the map.
Some streets on this map still exist (refer to http://www.streetmap.co.uk, look for hewitt avenue sunderland).
A colleague from my working days with the National Coal Board, remembers the local school kids getting parts from the crash and being visited by the local policeman to return the parts they had taken, (perspex, instruments etc)

Unlikely there are tanks down mines @ Catterick, I was local & there are no mines @ Catterick, several quarries in the area, years ago there were WW2 tanks on the Army ranges around Catterick/Richmond.Be interested to know where your friend thinks the mines are located. There are disused lead & copper mines in Swaledale, visited most of them in my youth, no tanks in any of them.

The Victor seems to be XL 191 of 55 Sqn which crash landed at Mt.Hope (Hamilton) Ontario,in June 1986 & was later scrapped. The cockpit section is thought to still exist.
No photos of Victor & Valiant together.
I have more MSG photos in the loft will try & find them!

I have pair of wheels which were on a small trailer in an engineering contractors yard @ Biggar, this was quite near the Carluke MU.
The hubs are in very good condition, the markings on the hub are : DRG NO AH2061, ISSUE 26, S9745C, an original Dunlop 7.50 x 10 tyre is fitted to one hub. The wheels may have been fitted to Mk 1 Spitfire, can any one confirm this?

Has anyone been to North East Aircraft Museum??

During excavations near Mcmullan Rd Darlington for new housing in the late Eighties, small items of aircraft wreckage was uncovered. I was a member of NEAM @ the time, the wreckage was from a Lancaster from Middleton St George,(early 1945,engine problems?) the pilots name was Mcmullan (Canadian squadron?),I think that he was killed in the crash,it was believed @ the time that he stayed with the plane to avoid crashing into existing houses. The Rd was named in his honour. The small items recovered were placed on a memorial board, a memorial board was later sent to his relative in Canada. The original board may now be in another local museum.
I will be visiting NEAM next week & will confirm this information then
