Important enough to give her a landing pad. Likely she can also rearm and refuel a helicopter (otherwise just the pad itself would have sufficed). The extra step to include some form of (bad) weather cover is minimal imho and makes her more verstile.

Yeah, I definitely agree that a landing pad is necessary. I think the space between between 2 AK-630s will be used to further secure the helicopter in bad weather condition.

On the other hand, I do believe that Vietnam do interest in buying arm from the west but I think it would take quite a long time before any major purchases to materialize. With Vietnam it’s an equation of both cost, politics and tech transfer.
Most of the times we can see that Russian arms are cheaper than the western and Vietnam has already used a russian systems so additional training and logistics costs won’t be too high.
Another bigger reason is political reason, Vietnamese leaders want to make sure that had a conflict happen, the arm supplier for Vietnam must continue to supply arm to Vietnam regardless of international political pressure. In this case, Vietnam has a long history dealing with Russia (SU in the past) so they still want to stick with Russian arms.
Finally, Russians are willing to sell Vietnam weapons/technology that they don’t offer else where such as the recent Bastion coastal defense, licensing of RPG-29, some domestic features on the Su-27/30 (claims by army insiders).

Thanks for this view. Looking at it, and particularly the service-bay-like area just forward of the landing pad, I’m wondering why they didn’t equip her with a (e.g. telescopic, as on Sovremenny?) hangar…

I heard that the main task of this vessel is as a command post (Sigma-E) system so it has good radars and datalink system to provide intels and guidance for smaller ships that Vietnamese navy is having in its arsenal. As a result, the ability to carry helicopter is not particularly important.

Related to the purchase price of Kilo 636-MVsubmarine, formerly reported that Vietnam Navy may have to buy Kilo 636-MV submarines with high prices. But according to sources, the price of Kilo 636-MV submarines that Russia sold to Vietnam is completely true and current prices Russia has started to manufacture first Kilo 636 submarines for Vietnam.

Russia often offers Vietnam good purchasing price for its military equipment probably owing to the historical relationship. I remembered they sold Su-27SK/UB to Vietnam at a relatively low price $28 or 30M a piece or something like that.

Can we tell something about its thrust to weight ratio judging from the fact that
it started moving at around the 7 second mark, and then lifted off at the
    24 second mark?

That is 17 seconds to lift off.

I don’t have sound on this computer so I cannot tell whether the afterburners
    were used.

I think it’s hard to tell because the time it takes from movement to lift off also depends on the aerodynamic of each plan such as lifting surface for example.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY4KvHWFbEM Compare to the PAK-FA it’s about 8-9 seconds from movement to lift off. (28s-36s)

Looking at the picture of the T-50-2 from the behind when it take-off(?), it does not seem to turn on its afterburner for take-off

I have seen some insiders from Vietnam claimed that the Kilo that will be built for Vietnam could be fitted with AIP fuel cells.
They also said that there is a strong possibility that the last 2/4 of the Kilo that Vietnam ordered could be fitted with VLS.
But it’s just claim so far 😉

Su-30MK3 – weren’t those equipped with Pero type PESA?

There are many rumors about what types of radar that were installed on board of Vietnamese Su-30.
Some claims that the newest batch of Su-30 Vietnam just received was armed with Irbis/Bars
Wikipedia however claims that the Su-30 MK3V will be installed with Zhuk MS-E radar
So it’s kind of hard to find out. Just speculation at this point.

LCA cost around USD45 million each, I think getting F-16 will be a better deal since they are both LCA/F-16 are subjected to US aprroval.

But buying an expensive combat aircraft will defeat the purpose. You still need certain number to make up for the old one especially Vietnam don’t have a huge defence budget.

Plus LCA has not achieved FOC and still years away from export.

Well, certainly Vietnam needs new planes to replace its aging fleet but even more so it needs trusted partner that could sell Vietnam the weapon.I think today it’s not so much about number but also be about survivability.
Vietnam do not plan to attack anyone but defend its territory so it’s likely that an asymmetric approach will be used. There are also rumors that Vietnam could possibly use Yak-130 for both training and patrolling around.

Saturn patent (Chepkin is one of the inventors) talks of dispencing nano- (word a la mode here) particles between some ‘object’ and enemy radar, various type of particles should dissolve radar waves of various lenght.

are these patents really have something to do with T-50 itself we are yet to see

sounds like some kind of chemical/plasma stealth device for me  if it’s true that they can do this, they can make old aircraft really stealthy as wel 😀
