wow quite incredible it still looks like it’s still in milatry hands.
up until 2002 usaaf base at goxhill in north lincolnshire was all there though flying ceased in 1945 and finally handed over to the farmer from the mod in the 50’s.
it was almost all there even today bar the runways and tower now gone most of the tech site buildings are there even the communial sites are still there. and if you look around the area of n/lincs you will quite a few airfields i.e kirton in lindsey which still has it’s grass runways also hemswell and surgate.

i have quite a few pictures of goxhill before and after land was sold.

hi quite intruiged with this thread.
i live on the isle of wight and am wondering if this could be the same aircraft which spends alot of time flying round the island and a frequant visitor i live in totland and have seen a spitfire on many occations as have been walking the dog on the warren.
it spends alot of time circling then heads over towards portsmouth area about 2 weeks ago i tried to take a photo last time i saw it though it did had another aircraft tailing it unforunatly the only camera i had at the time was a nokia camera phone so the quality is poor but one of you may be able to figure somthing out anyway hope it helps.

    regards

i reckon kirton in lindsey (former raiper barraks) should be one to be preserved too it as all main building’s ,tower ,hangers and even the grass runways and it too was used in the BoB
poss others to Consider J type at elsham wolds various building i.e 3 pill box’s battle HQ at goxhill.

also davidstow moor in cornwall it’s quite an amazing site and a unique feature regarding runways and all hardstandings from the air among the rough landscaping.

sorry if i sound sad but i think it was one of the best preserved airfields i have seen.

i put a bid in for watchtower and sheds and ops/block but was beaten apparently there was fierce compatition of the watch tower.
DDM were the one’s selling the building off for the farmer (can’t remember his name)
scince then i think back in 2002 the place has gone down hill.
ops block i think the guy is turning it in to a house
the runways were sold off as ponds now owned by “goat hill” fisheries
and most of the buildings are inclosed round a new metal fence
and the hangers have all had new doors roller shutters fitted

thats it i think but it don’t seem five mins scince walking round there on a summers day and it been like stepping back 60 years everything there

    well i guess it’s progress…
    cheers

i had it understood it was going to be rebuilt in the US

i took the demolished photo’s of the tower at goxhill for rob truman on the control tower web site i spent many a hour taking pictures and and recording details of the site inc communial site which some are still complete in and around goxhill
unfortunatly the site is rapidly disaperring.
i have the map with the location of all the building’s etc just after some detailed infomation on the 496th fighter training group i even have a video that was taken with a mustang gun camera and a 24v battery trhat some bloke had rigged up very interesting video lots serial numbers of the p-38 and p-51 after they were given to the unit

    cheers
