the weather wasnt that bad i live near ryde so easy for me to get there there was plenty of room on the crowd line brading downs make a superb backdrop for the aircraft as they perform.
i went to last years to but this years there were alot more people there.
anyway sorry about the pics took my digi cam and it refused to work even when i bought and replaced batterys loads of times so i was left to use my mobile. there is another thread with alot better pics
cheers
hi there just thought i would share some pictures i took today unfortunatly my digi cam broke and had to dig into my pocket and use my humble nokia phone so i have picked some good pics i do apologise about the quality.
anyway hope you enjoy them cheers rick
and it was brilliant to see sally b there to 🙂
thanks for that are you watching the fireworks tomorrow
that will be £1.000.000 thankyou for work carried out on your plane
good point Melvyn but life is about dreams
mmmm!! tuff one if it had to be one that was in existence i think it would be the P-38F 1 LO 41-7630 (glacier girl) or any P38 why because the P38 is unique design and a beautiful aircraft or if not that then i would put some serious money into recreating a short stirling or handley page hampden (flying examples would be nice)
thanks
the p-38 “beautiful”
i don’t think it’s from a lightning i included a pic of a prop of a crashed p-38 lightning (if thats what you were refering to) from near goxhill that was placed on the memorial there.
anyway my opinion the prop looks german as someone said before
thanks
there was plans of a museum there but was transfered to hemswell and they hold the allison engines which were from the crash site there belonging to a P-38J “42-67199” which crashed on 26/05/44 piloted by lt lane a ferrara who was killed in the accident. i think the reason why the airfield is so complete is because the farmer who did own the land (parts sold a few years ago) his father looked after the place doing repairs etc to keep it like it is now. but his son? who is the farmer now couldn’t give a damn well thats what i figured when i spoke to him.
have got more pics if anyone interested plus a have a small film (on video) taken in 1944 when the 496th FTG was there shot by one of the personel using a gun camera and a 24v battery pack.
cheers
yep loads but unfortunatly the watch tower and runways have now gone but hangers J type and 2 T2 and many buildings ie opps block + offices , armoury ,MT yard , gas defence stores ,fabric store , link trainer , turret trainer + more survive ,and on the outer of the airfield there is a the main living communial sites which air raid towers complete with sirens , gym ,shops , cinema survive. cheers
similar to goxhills it had 3 pill boxes in hedge rows 2 north 1 south and the americans added a raised box to the battle head quaters on SW of the airfield they are still all there today and i think the BHQ was drained of water and restored and you can go into the one at NW near memorial though the anderson shelter part is flooded will try to dig out pics
thanks
the 1st FG 71st FS arived at goxhill in 1942 with P-38’s and while the 94th FS went round the corner to kirton in lindsey. a bit of useless info goxhill was the first airbase handed to the usaaf and at the ceremony was dwight d eisenhower and high up members of raf and usaaf (can’t remember names brain like Sieve) and dure in the ceremony a rouge german plane dropped a bomb and hit close to the cross over points of the runways the bomb sank due to wet soil conditions and was left there untill after the war.
don’t worry about it. never seen “bloody” written so many times in a post.
good luck with your research
cheers
some nice photos quite an impressive plane.
it’s a shame because the cockpit is in a real bad 🙁 state and the conifer trees behind seem to be eating it up.
was the plane transfered to the IOW whole beause like i said there is a couple of delapadated jet engines and various bent panels in skips look like they have been there a while.
went back today to get better shots as the case of sods law goes got a flat battery on phone so will try again (digi cam packed up a few weeks ago)
cheers
not sure but did the 52nd & 31st FG’s operate spitfires in africa??
