OK, making good progress now. The Royal Armouries in Leeds found some useful original factory drawings, and one of my Aussie contacts had some dimensional data. I’ve now updated my CA-1 Wirraway drawing with accurate barrel details (hard to see on a JPEG file on the web) and I’m half-way into creating usable drawings of the whole gun.
You can see the updated drawing at the top of my CA-1 Wirraway page. More to come soon…
Making my way to the Royal Armouries next week, with some time booked in their library… let’s see what I find. They also have a part-time researcher looking into it for me…
Thanks QldSpitty. The Aerodrome site has lots of great detail on the early Vickers aircraft guns (Mark I and Mark II) for WWI aircraft. From there (a long while ago) I found a link to the Fine Model Works website, which has some excellent Vickers gun drawings, but sadly not the Mark V.
Thanks for the tips Don, I’ll chase these down.
Regards,
Derek

Just added some more information to the Wirraway page, a list of surviving aircraft. I’m sure it’s not complete, so let me know if you can make any additions.
It would also be good to get a photo of each surviving aircraft for this page (with the permission of the photographer) so let me know if you can pass on any photos which I can use.
Jan,
drawings and data for the Gannet are very rare. I have a CAD drawing by Alex Pedashenko (the accuracy of which I have never checked), and there are several small reproductions of original factory drawings with lots of detail (but hard to read) in the recently published book by Keith Meggs. PM me and I’ll see if I can get something to you.
Regards,
Derek
Interesting problem Frank. In fact digital preservation is a big problem around the world… see the Wikipedia article on Digital Libraries.
My suggestion would be to load all your photos (along with detailed descriptions) onto Wikimedia Commons, where they will be stored as part of an enormous searchable public archive. For the text content, you could use an archiving site like backupURL. I have not used this service, so I’m not recommending it, but its an example of a free web archiving site. I don’t know how long sites like this will last, but if you use several sites like this your content should be around for a while.
An interesting Argosy side note: When I was a kid growing up in Melbourne, I often rode my bike over to Essendon airport to watch the comings and goings. One day VH-BBA was in the Ipec hangar undergoing some serious maintenance, so my mate and I talked our way up into the cockpit and sat inside her for a while. When we came to leave, we swung ourselves down from the cockpit into the cargo bay via the floor hatch in the cockpit. As we hit the floor we noticed that the entire aircraft was rocking. It turned out that BBA had her wheels off and was sitting on jacks, from which we almost tipped her onto the floor!
Cheers,
Derek
