Thanks for the reply
I had constructed a scenario in which Kyle was flying the older one “J9590”, and Borthwick-Clarke the newer one “K1081”. When I understood the cause of the accident and what happened to Kyle i.e… “hit from behind” and probably lost tail I assumed this had been the one that went in “vertical”. So I was hoping you could confirm the one that went “deep” as this was in all probability the Kyle one. Good to se my hunch was right!
And this is Kyle…

By the way – what book was the book with Borthwick-Clarke anecdotes in ? do you remember?
PS you have a PM

Fighterace thanks for the update and description of what was found and I look forward to seeing the final show when it is out

Small update It looks like one shredded the wing as it fell.. and buried deep..
“
One machine crashed like a bolt from the blue,” at terrific sliced and with such force that it was almost completely buried in the ground. Both machines fell on meadowland belonging Mr. J. F. Eldridge. one in the “Plain,” and the other in “Sandpines.” but about half-a-mile apart. It was the former which crashed with the greater speed and force. But parts of the machine broke away and one wing fell near to the cottages owned by Mr. Eldridge and occupied by Messrs. V. Thompson, W’. Franklin and C. Watts. about three or four hundred yards away. Other parts were found at greater distances from the machine, which, itself, was a mass of indescribable wreckage. “
Are you taking about the First Minister of Scotland?
I would suggest that it may be D7808 which was HAS (Home Aircraft Depot) 1.27 then 207 Sqn 1927. PD Ascot, AD Aboukir; 4 FTS Abu Sueir 3.28-1-29
207 Sqn were on DH9a at Eastchurch at the time
Chichester Observer – Wednesday 22 June 1927 provides detail Page 7
Incident Date Confirmed: Friday 17th June 1927
Tangmere’ Plane Damaged
Hits Telephone Pole at Shoreham
Forced to land though engine trouble a plane form Tangmere Aerodrome alighted safely in a field at Shoreham on Friday night, but there was not sufficient room for it to pull up, and a wing struck a telephone pole doing considerable dame. The Pilot was unhurt.
I can’t tell you the aircraft but I can date the accident
Two photos of the incident appear on Page 4 of the Worthing Herald – Saturday 25 June 1927 though they are very dark
One picture is exactly the same as the one posted
It gives some more info with captions
R.A.F. PLANE DOWN AT SHOREHAM
The scene of the RAF crash at Shoreham, showing the partly demolished hoarding and the telegraph pole which broke of the wings of the machine. Members of the RAF from Tangmere can be seen dismantling the plane
Another view of the crash showing the propeller (left). and mechanics disentangling the broken wing from the telegraph pole. The pilot, who was in the ‘plane alone, was uninjured
If local I would imagine one of the Eastchurch Machines
What is the source of the ordinal photo ? Even I’m the late 1920’s people mobility was low so if cams from local source to Airspeed crash maybe other aircraft crashed in same local
The EC-CCB missing from this page obviously allocated but not yet identified?
Does anyone know if EC-CCB was a valid spainish registration and if so what it was ?
I said remove one of the TEST CYCLES not ….
Quicker
Hurricanes easier to build – using technology and materials from a large Manufacturer that had not changed in around 10 years
Spitfires. new type of manufacturing requires, a small a niche supplier (I know owned by Vickers, but still built at Eastleigh) needing new tooling and skilled workforce
PS Have you eliminated Frederick Maurice Hennessy 654nn5 as being your mother’s Uncle ? “nn” unclear on Air-78
I think so because he would appear to be
Frederick Maurice Hennessy, 1921 – 2006
A service number of 531128 is one is issued from October 1925 onwards to Civilians
Using analysis of similar service numbers based on CWGC web site shows men which ages 24/25who died in 1940 which implies DOB of 1915/1916 so that matches
TRUMAY, LAWRENCE HERBERT Aircraftman 2nd Class 531133 20/02/1940 24
MOULD, EDWARD MELVILLE Sergeant 531169 03/06/1940 25
STEPHENS, CYRIL Sergeant 531100 08/08/1940 24
So it looks like that could match, best next bet is to apply for his full service file (as Next On Kin) or record of service (as anyone else for £30)
