Air Britain Crash List in Aeromilitaria only detail crashes on land!

Ross McNeill probably has the most comprehensive sea crash information for around the UK which he has been gathering for many many years now.

MACFADZEAN was down initially as “Missing believed killed on Active Service”, then subsequently updated to “Killed on Active Service” so a body must have been recovered later

These two aircraft in Northumberland Aviation Diary and Air Britain Aeromilitaria Summer 2009 as crashing on this day with 59 OTU

Air Britain has

27.03.43 Hurricane I W9121 59 OTU 1/2 mile SE of Brunton Cause: Undershot Landing at Night
27.03.43 Hurricane I W9184 59 OTU Chathill Northumberland Cause: Crashed on Take off at Night

I could not find MACFADZEAN on the UK Death Registers but it looks like a body was recovered because he is buried at KIRKNEWTON (ST. GREGORY) CHURCHYARD

Northumberland Aviation Diary puts Sgt (Pilot) Gordon A. CULLENER – 1383311(who died of wounds or injuries received on active service) on Hurricane W9121 at Brunton. But same source had Sgt Robert H.M. MACFADZEAN on W9184 at Chathill, Northumberland which as we now know is incorrect

Of course no one may have been killed on W9184. The 59 OTU ORB may solve this mystery but I do not have it!

Did officers have kit bags?

The number appears to be an enlisted man at first glance.

Yes it is an enlisted mans the only way to trace the enlisted man is download all Air 78 W’s and read through them till you get a match on Service number

Can’t see a Serviceman A G. Wainwright on Air 78 witrh those numbers..

I checked London Gazette as well and the number didn’t come up

I would suggest the only option is to check all Air 78 record for surname = ‘W’ and see if you get a match on servicenumber a long job!

I would guess that your P/O A.G. Wainwright is actually P/O ALEC GEORGE WAINWRIGHT 73 Sqn kiled 21/01/1941 who comissioned number 84675 and serviceman service number was 742052 – He is in Air 78-163

1241014 is a service number allocated to a serviceman (not officer in April 1940 at Cardington) – Of course he may have been comissioned later
