Ah-ha Thanks for the reply Peter, thought it was strange never seen one like that before. It being a good idea im surprised it didn’t become a standard fit for JU-87s….Thanks again.
Just to say this Mag is very interresting. One question though, At the top of page 40 on the right is a JU-87 with side facing machine guns in the rear gunner position. As ive never seen such a Ju-87 as that I was wondering what mark it was or could it be a DIY mod….It fails to mention anything about the aircraft in the supporting text…..Any help most welcome…Gary
Thanks for the answers and the link guys, those poor ******s returning from that mission must have been scared witless against highly trained nightfighter crews. Well at lest now I can convey to joe public just what these guys went through…Again guys many thanks, Gary

Wonderful thread guys, I was a big Air Ace fan, like many on here have said it was my weekly treat. I did have one that sticks out in my mind mainly because it was very strange, every second page was in full colour which for that time i found incredable. I then got into Warlord, Speed and Power, and Battle which had in it a story called ” Lofty’s One Man Luftwaffe” about a RAF pilot who infiltrates a Luftwaffe fighter unit…..Oh how the years are turned back.
many thanks, Rii you have solved an age old problem for me. I sometimes take crews out to RC-135 and I did think the Russians had something doing the same job, but I hadn’t a clue what it was…Again many thanks.
Great guide got mine today. But i wish someone would do a mag about the other side. What tactics did the Luftwaffe use against such well armed formations? How did the German air defence system develope? The nightfighter war! What impact did the introduction of jet fighters have on the bomber offensive….There is so much that has not been covered about the other side…It would make for very interesting reading.
I think it’s a great idea! were already getting ready to use french aircraftcarriers, perhaps if we ask really nicely they can let us have the Patrouille De France do all the reds events (after all they do use the same smoke colors, and joe public wouldn’t notice the hawks were changed into Alpha Jets!)…..Or we can go with my idea and a real crowd pleaser, use one of our few remaining C-130 and throw 9 MPs out the back with smoke cannisters on thier legs and NO chutes…Think of the money we would save.
Long Live the Reds…….
What a fantastic day, This is why i tend to do only the small re-enactment venues, Friendly people, great organisation, and a terrific way of raising money for needy causes…Big thanks to Jason for the invite (hang in there mate, you and the museum team are doing a wonderful job) also to Gary Dean who educated the Luftwaffe on the P-51s finer points ( awesome work Gary, any chance of building a 109?) and a big thanks to the other folks who turned up on the day for not giving the Luftwaffe to much of a hard day…Even though it was hard watching the gun camera footage in the hall.

I was at Coningsby when it all kicked off, as a driver i was working with 228OCU and got chating to one of the instructors, and being rather young and bullish made the statement that the ruddy Argie air force wont have a hope against our lot, to which the instructor said ” airman ive just come back from a 6 month detachment to a mirage unit in France, their with us were some of those Argie’s and let me tell you they were bloody good!” and this was to be proved right, very right…Thankfully more of the bombs they dropped didn’t go off, than the ones that did or it might had been a whole lot worse. Those days were great, not because of the war but because of the british people. When going out on the road delivering kit to Brize or where ever people would cheer us as we drove past.

Totally agree Dogtail, when i passed out at Swinderby, the RAF band from cranwell played the Luftwaffe March as we left the parade ground. I dont think ive ever had a bigger smile on my face since. Ive got the soundtrack in my car and never get bored with it.
I was 8 when BOB was made and i remember one dinner time playing on the school playing field, when the teacher in charge suddenly screamed at us all to lay down (yes we all thought she had gone mad) I layed on my back and was in ore as a formation of aircraft flew over the school, all with crosses on thier wing it was incredable. When it came out in 69, I went to see it in norwich and in those day there was an intermission and down at the front below the screen they had some of the R/C models they used in the film production….I being an aviation nut even at that age was in heaven.
P.S while on movies, I was talking in a public phone box in Thetford to my wife (then girlfriend) when five B-17s went over being chased and fired at by a gang of 109s….yep that was the filming of memphis Bell, the sound was incredable with 5 B-17s, god knows what a large formation would sound like..
Gary
