But are 5 MiG-29/UB’s an adequate number?

Upgrade your MiG-21’s – arguably you don’t need anything than an aircraft for policing your airspace and given that you aren’t exactly a rich country, anything else would be a waste of funds.

Given that the UK is unlikely to acquire Tranche 3, and the germans are talking of cutbacks, are there any possiblities of Spain and Italy cutting their numbers too?

How are the Saudis coping with maintaining flight hours if they’re near broke?

I think most countries would still fare pretty well with F-4’s, F-5’s, A-4’s etc Most countries cannot afford 4th generation fighters and neither can their potential enemies.

I have always wondered how all these high techfighters would fare in a protracted war in which logistics are disrupted etc. I read that in the Korean war, USAF pilots would’ve gladly stripped the F-86 of some of its more sophisticated equipment to reduce weight and to allow the jets to stay more operational. Another article I read came from a French pilot who said that in peace he prefers the Mirage III, but in war the MiG-21 is preferred becuase of its ruggedness.

The ultimate question would be if World War III started in 1990 between the USSR and NATO, would the US and her allies be able to sustain flight ops with modern sophisticated jets that are pretty maintennance intensive and realiant on proper airfields, or would the Communists have had a long term advantange with relatively unsophisticated aircraft flying from bits of highway etc.

From what I know, the US rarely deploys entire squadrons. They usually deploy parts of squadrons, while the remainder of the squadrons aircraft are retained for training or for maintennance. 10 aircraft squadrons are too small, though they are the right size for Navy squadrons because they deploy on carriers.

It must be remembered that the US needs to maintain large numbers of aircraft forward deployed. Arguably there not only needs to be some F-22’s deployed in the US but at least one wing would be needed in Europe and one in Asia. Though Saddam is dead, the Middle East is still highly volatile. In Asia there is a growing number of Flankers so a wing in Japan and maybe another one in Alaska would make sense. The US wings would be used for fattening up forward deployed units in times of crisis.

Though quality is arguably better than quantity, a country such as the US needs both. I don’t think 218 F-22’s are enough, especially once training, maintennance and attrition are taken into account.

Finally though the F-22 may be the be all and end all of modern air superiority fighters, some are likely to be shot down in combat especially if the US decides to take on some better equipped forces. So a few more F-22’s would come in handy.

Even if they do acquire the F-22, there will only be 218 0f them, if the USAF is really lucky. That will probably mean two operational wings (each with 3 squadrons of 25 a/c – is that still USAF sqn size) and an OCU, and probably no spares. This will probably mean only a couple of US based units (1st FW and who else?), while units deployed anywhere else in the world will be equipped with F-35’s, which will have to take on A2A duties as well.

This is an air defence fighter so it is needed in much larger numbers than the highly specialised F-117 or even B-2A (though everyone agrees that 21 is a joke).

Hmmmm….I’m going to have to scrap some of those rules as I am a rebel without a cause who naturally despises rules.

Ground Attack/Air Defence/Strike/Recce: A-1 Sky Raider – what a plane, this thing is the aircraft equivalent of a Hells Angel on steroids.

Trainer: T-28 Trojan – well we are flying A-1’s after all! And I like the look of it…so nyah!

Transport: C-47 Dakota. It’ll fly for 50 years, and then it’ll fly for another 50 years

Weren’t these meant to be sold to the U.S. for Aggressor training? Or are they taken from the machines that are to be left in Swiss service?

Firstly, why did they change the F-22 Lightning II into the F/A-22 (C)Raptor?

So make the F-35 the Lightning II then instead!

I agree – the MiG-29’s combat record is rather poor. I know it maybe that they were used against better equipped airforces, but with the PLAAF and many South East Asian countries becoming equipped with either Flankers or modern F-16’s (and maybe F-15/Eurofighter for Singapore), then Vietnam would be better off getting Flankers instead of MiG-29’s.

Slovakia will only have 12 upgraded Mig-29s in the future. Poland will have 48 F-16blk50s and I belive some 40-50 Mig-29s.

The Czechs don’t use the MiG-29 – they were swapped with Poland for some W-3’s. Czech Republic only uses the MiG-21 and the L-159. Hungary will use Gripen along with MiG-29.

So the Romanians only have 100 or so upgraded MiG-21 Lancers?

These Eastern European airforces seem to be slowly disappearing. Are they of any use to NATO?

Hmmmm…Could this reference to “Western a/c” be aimed at both Russian and European a/c in service?

Geographically, Russia has always been considered as a part of Europe, which lies to the West of India (North-west).

So though Su-30MKI’s are being acquired, MiG-21/23/25/29’s will be phased out gradually along with M2000 and Jaguar, and this will all be replaced by an idigenous design.

    Just my interpretation.

Just out of curiosity – does anyone know whether Spain intends on replacing its EF-18’s with the Eurofighter post-2015, or will it be replaced by another aircraft such as the F-35? It seems a bit silly for Spain to operate two types with similar roles.
