again very interesting, this is slowly coming together.
I’ll post what we think the final element looks like when it finally makes sense.
The RAF took delivery of TIALD (two prototype pods) under a UOR in 90-91 and used it in Granby.
The full production integration followed some time afterwards, and the pod entered service on Jaguar first (’95) and then Tornado, and finally Harrier.
The upgrade to TIALD 400 (a change of one LRU) occurred on Tornado and Harrier first, as T200 worked well enough on Jag making the upgrade less urgent.
I don’t know if T500 has happened.
AFAIK only the UK and Oman use TIALD.
Thank you. That was very helpful and I am grateful.
I would still be interested in the following, even if you can only give rough or partial answers.
How many TIALDS in total?
Are they all being retained in service- even the ones that were on Jaguar?
When did the upgrade to 400 occur?

JANE’S DEFENCE WEEKLY – JULY 25, 2001
——————————————————————————–
In Brief – UK awards TIALD upgrade
BAE Systems Avionics of Crewe Toll, Edinburgh, has been awarded a single-source contract to upgrade the thermal-imaging airborne laser designator (TIALD) pods used by the UK Royal Air Force’s Harrier, Jaguar and Tornado ground-attack aircraft
BAE will modify the fighters’ currently fielded systems to the enhanced TIALD 5/Series 500 standard under the Defence Procurement Agency award.
Mowers, are you a fan of Falcon 4.0, by any chance?
Nope, play WW2OL. Nothing else
I could. But each is very different.
It doesnt break forum rules, indeed having read the forum rules I am breaking none of them OR the spirit of them. Nor do I intend to.
If the Mods deem that they are creating clutter rather than providing informative and interesting debate then they can merge them. But my intention was to have clear conversations.
This forum is full of people who would love nothing else than to side track a clearly defined thread. Normally because they dont know the answer and cant contribute in an effective or meaningful way. Thus by having seperate threads the chance of being spammed by someone is low – but the is always someone
That is my last question for now.
Thank you. Thats useful.
The dispensers are Saab BOL.
That other system you mention are the towed decoys on the wingtip.
Designed by the Italian “GEM Elettronica”, the Italian/UK “Selex” and the Spanish “Indra Sistemas” companies, built by Selex. The system’s name was “Cross Eye” in the past, not sure that’s still the case.http://www.selex-sas.com/datasheets/EFADASS.pdf
