    Hi Cees!
    Ask and ye shall receive!
    See here: http://www.planesandchoppers.com/picture/number7566.asp
(I used up my photo quota on this site long ago! The above site has over 600 of my aircraft photos on it, by the way, most with extensive captions.)

“Jet – The Story of a Pioneer” by Sir Frank Whittle, 1953 edition hardback bought via Abe Books (no decent bookshops in Sweden and anyway all books are very expensive here!)

This was discussed at great length on this Forum a long time ago and I contributed a photograph, but searching has not turned up the thread. I, like many others, reject the idea completely – my photo showed the effect of the side bubble in the cockpit perspex which could, with some imagination, be thought to be a face.

I think it was the Allison V-1710 of 1931, 2 years before the Merlin. Reference: Bill Gunston’s “The Development of Piston Aero Engines” page 135. The American marketing name for ethylene glycol was “Prestone”.
It seems that it could have been used earlier, just that no-one thought of it!

Hello Super Sioux: here is one of the pictures I took that day, and there others (but not of Lightnings) on the same site, look for “1968”:

Unfortunately digital cameras didn’t exist then and film (and developing) cost money . . .

Very useful for me – living next to the Göta Älv in Gothenburg – I can see when interesting vessels are about to come by, nip up the hill next door with my camera and get great photos – which are then posted on the Shipsandharbours.com web site (see Countries/Sweden).

Definitely worth visiting, I was there a few weeks ago. However rather difficult to find as the local people don’t seem to know that it’s there! Even though I speak some Polish, I walked straight past it from the nearest tram stop! I discovered later that the clue is a wing placed vertically in the woods – the museum entrance is along the nearby road, behind a new housing estate. There are no signs whatsoever!
I will be putting my pictures on the planesandchoppers web site when I have time – it’s a real treasure trove!

Here are a Spitfire, a stuffed goat (332 Sqn mascot) and the dog Varg (331 Sqn mascot) in Bodo aviation museum, which is well worth a visit, by the way.
A picture to celebrate my birthday, since I become officially an old goat today and can use my bus pass (which I have already received)!

I shall (as I do once or twice a week) tomorrow be giving a guided tour to visitors in the Aeroseum, an underground hangar near Gothenburg the size of 3 football pitches and containing such aircraft as Viggens and Drakens. Is this the only museum that permits people to sit in Draken and Viggen cockpits?
It was completed in 1955 and initially used to house a squadron of J 39 Tunnans, later Hawker Hunters.
It is located on the far side of Gothenburg City airport (Säve) to which Ryanair flies from Stansted and Prestwick.
We are mounting a major air show at Säve on 30-31 August, which will have Swedish Air Force participation (including the Gripen); see the Aeroseum web site, which I have now translated into English.
    (Shameless plug)

Not in my territory (Sweden) either – what’s up with the BBC, aren’t we foreigners allowed to see such secret aircraft?
