“. . . then our governments would accomodate”
No, Steve, that I just cannot believe! At least as far as Mr Blair and co. are concerned, and regardless of party affiliations, there isn’t a politician in the UK who would allow public money to be spent of historic aviation. Don’t forget they killed all “live” aviation in the Bristish Isles quite effectively!
. . . move to supporting a rational and co-ordinated collection policy within each museum, each country, and globally.
That’s a policy I would support wholeheartedly, but I am afraid there will always be as many different opinions as to what would be worth preserving as there are enthusiasts and officials, especially those with money willing to support preservation of their “favourites”, so unfortunately this eminently worthy approach is I feel personally a non-starter.
Emotions run high on this subject, as witnessed by the posts accompanying the frequent polls which ask which is the “best” of a certain type, for example.

With sincere apologies for going off thread, and I’ll pull this post if anyone asks me to – but Whitleyfreak might need this for identification purposes!

Sorry, skypilot62, there was a perspex sheet covering the rear of this section of the aircraft, through which I took the photo, so it was physically impossible to get closer to the instrument panel! However if you ask the Nanton museum staff nicely, I am sure they would do their best to help you.
