    Beech 18

I was working in Jeddah in 1981 and the beach was mounted on a plinth outside the entrance to the old airport ,there were B-26 s sat at the far side of the airport ,photo somewhere!!I was taking photos when the police appeared so did not go back again!Lots of stuff in the scrapyard there ,to far away to be certain but certainly single engined types(maybe Mustangs?)

    For instance

I suppose missing the docks and obliterating the city of Plymouth was just a navigational error or hitting Bristol or Bath or……..?My mother witnessed the bringing ashore and marching through the town(Amble ,Northumberland) a Luftwaffe crew ,they had to have an army escort as the people wanted to “string em up”.I am sure it did happen elsewhere.

    Bangkok

Thailand is OK!!If the Red shirts are on the march again you may have to keep out the city centre but I believe the Gvmt will stop the airport being zapped.19 hours ?You need a hotel but not the airport one ,there are several nearbye and you can get a visa on arrival (good for 28 days).Dont know how old you are but Bangkok has plenty of life and places to see, just dont accept drinks from women or you might wake up 24 hours later with nothing!!As for Hong Kong I and my family visited it from BKK and only paid 100 pounds return on an Air india flight(3 years ago). There are many travel shops in BKK have a google and see thier prices, thought Thai air were reducing prices right now?

    Bombing civilians

Dont forget the Biadecker raids. A firend(now dead)worked at Boulton & Paul in Wolverhampton,he volunteered to drive a truck with parts urgently needed in a factory in Coventry and arrived as the raid that flattened coventry started, what he remembered as he tried to get his truck to the delivery point was driving near a factory area and the street was flowing with what he thought was oil but was margarine and cooking fat and in it were bodies of people ,dogs etc ,he spent the night helping rescue trapped people . 1970 and he was still having nightmares about it.I make no comment on bombing cities and tit for tat may not be justified but in the case of Germany it was a whole nation against Europe and they got what they deserved.I was born in 1942 and too young to remember much except there were a lot of widows about including my mum and her sister.Nuff said.

    Factual movies

A lot of interest in the “Dambusters ” remake right now and discussion on how “real”movies look. Before its too late could there not be a movie made about pilots who join up and are sent to America for training and then back to the UK for operational flying? There are enough types around to do a fair factual movie? Lots of ex trainers in the states and with todays technological movie making night bombing with real Lanc/Halifax interiors could be done?Might be a good idea for a bit of Blood and gore interior shots also to show it wasnt all “good show chaps”?!!How about a few minutes of groundcrew sweating to do engine changes before the next op or bombing up and how dangerous that could be?Even a bit of Mossie night fighting or Beau could be done?

    Pundit

adendum to my previous post ,as I recall the pundit was powered by an engine driven generator .There was a cloud base searchlight that was also used to determine cloud base height!!If I remember correctly it was situated on the corner of the MT building.Perhaps its still there!

    Fate off another Canberra?

While at St Athan in 1958 a Canberra was brought into the training hangar and was used mainly by the armourers.I think it was a B2 and had been used in the suez campaign.one feature was a large pale blue speedbird type logo on the fin.Anyone of you Canberra experts know which one this might have been?

    Pundit beacon

RAF Oakington had a beacon that was a proper towable trailer (colour ,air force blue)it was situated in a field between the officers mess and the pig farm. When night flying started the duty electrician would have to walk out to it and switch in on,it would take several minutes to do this and then start transmitting the morse letters for the station.I did this many times,I think the name pundit came from the noise it made as each letter lit up!Again ,I do not know what happened to it,perhaps there should be a thread for ex RAF ground equipment ,there must be lots about!!!?
