Well that brought back some memories, not all pleasant as someone who spent two years of his life there fixing Hunters! One of my 35mm slides actually appears amongst them!!Good one of the venoms (also 8sqdn)and the biplanes (?).Britain pulled out in 1967 ,not many servicemen shed tears over this.

Think 30 metres was mentioned ?That’s not so deep these days,on air you have about 9 minutes without decompression.

The Divers report said found 200 yards of Cawsand bay. That sounds a little close for a ditching.

Further south at Porto Alegre there is a small museum dedicated to Varig.Unfortunaly it was only open on weekdays and I was working weekdays!!I found that the sole airframe was a DC3.

Thank you!I had not thought of that incident on the beach,I would have been about 8/9 years old(say 1951)and obviously it had crashed into the nearby rocks as it was pretty crumpled! From the local beaches south of Amble you could hear the gunfire offshore as the fighters practiced!

Also the interiors of many types were dirty and lots of bare metal and scuff marks.Engine exhaust soot was awful stuff to get of coveralls or anoraks etc!!

“Berlin Noir”by Phillip Kerr.He has written a series of books about a Berlin detective(Bernie Gunther)that starts c1936 and ends up with his latest book set in Greece in 1957.Well researched and lots of good stuff leading up to and after WW2!
