    De-activated

Used to do odd jobs for a Devon recovery team. One awful rainy day I was asked to inspect some ordinance brought up by a trawler in Plymouth harbour, after inspecting the same I concluded it was in fact probably a harpoon gun as there where a lot of whaling ships impressed during the war,it appeared to have a round in the breach! The skipper was reluctant to part with it so I left.Years later((@98)I bumped into him,:what did you do with the harpoon gun?” “Oh I cleaned it up and had it mounted on the front garden!”Also in Plymouth sound are lots of souvenirs from the falklands war,I had parts of an SLR which I did clean and all of it worked OK!Whoever bought my old house might get a suprise one day!!Also bombs ,19th century grenades, old live ammo etc etc!

Thanks for the information!!I am really a historic avaition buff being almost historic myself!I do a fair amount of travel and do take an interest in avaition around me so if I spot any unusual items I will post them.Local leaving airport for home is Yushno -Sakhalinsk (Russian Fed),this is a fairly busy airport with lots of AN 24s,Mil helicopters and the weekly(?) Transaero airbus,TU-154s also fly from here.

Being ex coastal and having a few hours (albeit as groundcrew!)flying in them I also am sad to see the last one shut down. One memory is of a shack at Ballykelly doing a beat up over the squadron at ……well, very low indeed ,if only video had been available to us all then!Much better than seeing fast jets!!Pity they couldnt get rid of that large carbuncle underneath though!!

Nice response! It would be nice if someone could get thier hands on old copies and have them put on the web,as said the safety aspect of the magazine made for compulsive reading if only for groundcrew to say there it wasnt our fault!Seriously though I remember being given one of the canvas toobags(that although lockable could be opened easily) with a minimum toolkit(electrical) to which you could add any useful tool you could afford, some of which used to get left in A/c and cause accidents.Happy day when shadow boards and accountability for lost tools came in.

In about 1966 a Valletta turned up at RAF Oakington and was transported to the fire dump area.Being curious airmen ,myself and a friend had a look inside and it was full of old generators and starter motors and other electrical items, being both elect mechs we knew there was a fair amount of copper looking at us,unfortunatly at that moment the resident RAF policeman turned and in thier usual polite fashion told us to go away and leave things be!As if we had any other ideas! Also saw Lincolns being chopped up at Aldergrove @1960.I think component parts would obviously be used if they were common to other types ,obviously in the case of the Valletta this was not so.

I am working on a construction site in the far east of Russia,we have a bar for supervisory staff only, manual labour do not get any(well not that we know!)So we are supposed to be responsible persons and moderate our intake.Every morning a random office is breathalysed and if you are positive you are sacked,no excuses you are of the site by lunchtime and yes we do have about two cases a month. So what about people in the UK that get up after a night out drive to a factory and switch on the machinery they use!Can an employer introduce such a scheme in the UK?Maybe it would make people think twice?

    Lincolns

When I joined as a boy entrant in 1958 I was at Cosford for 8 wks sqare bashing. On our first day we were allowed in the two big hangars next to the parade ground to look at/in the aircraft inside and there where lots!!One was a Lincoln ,what happened to it ?In 1961 while on an excersise at RAF Aldergrove I saw lots of Lincolns being cut up for scrap,no survivors there!!

    Tracker

While working in Guantanamo Bay in 1994 a friend found a tracker while spearfishing/diving,a party of us used to dive it on a regular basis.Apparently it crashed (looks like double eng failure)after taking of and is now at 38 metres with wheels up but bomb bay doors open.Research has it crashing C 1971.There are several fuselages dumped around the bay including a bearcat ,navy type Harvard and a fairchild -123(?).
