    Cambridge Hastings

A little of the RAF Colerne topic, but was the Cambridge Hastings TG510???

The engine bearers from the Hastings were still to be found along with the Cockpit section of Canberra WJ863 until a couple of years ago lurking in the long grass at the Cherry Hinton/Coldhams Lane end of the Airfield.

Any one got a pic of the Hastings while at Cambridge?

Better late than never! (Taken in 1976)

    G-BEDV’s Flying Career

I am pretty sure ‘DV flew after the demise of the other Varsity. However, the crash caused concern and I remember a test flight when ‘a minor flutter’ was reported on one of the engines and a priority landing was requested. This was, of course, granted by the tower but, at that moment, the Gliding Club chose to pull a glider across the end of the runway and she had to go around!

Unfortunately, I have no way of dating the incident, although I am sure that the crash was in my mind (and probably those in the tower), when this event happened.

    G-BJHS at Duxford

Maybe it was bound for Coningsby.

There is a photo of G-BJHS at Coningsby on Airliners.net, taken on June 16 1990, which probably dates the photo in post#1.

    G-BJHS at Duxford

The only time I recall seeing this Sunderland at Duxford was when it made a flyby at about Midday on a Saturday, presumably, when it was also seen over Gt Shelford. I saw it clearing to the east which is consistent with the direction shown on the photograph. I believe it was en route to display at Waddington.

    Houses at Duxford

The proposed ‘development’ at Duxford is an idea from the agents for the landowner, Gonville and Caius College. They have to persuade the College to fund and pursue it.

Our esteemed Airfield Manager told a recent Parish Council meeting that the corridor of land leading to runway 24 is now ‘protected’ and cannot be built on. I hope this is more effective than SSSI status! The ‘development’ area did not infringe on the 24 approach.

I am presenting the above for clarification, not because Duxford residents welcome the prospect of being swallowed up by urban sprawl or are complacent about the continued operation of our historic site.

    F1 at Duxford

The village has been leafleted to stir up protest against the F1 testing but all the subsequent messages to the PC have been in favour.

    Position of Buchon Shots

I forgot to mention that you needed to be standing on Grange Road at the entrance to Barkers Farm to get the appropriate angles.

    Cambridgeshire Churches

UOTE=Postfade;1376358]I was back at Duxford today for the Fighter Collection evening and took the opportunity to drive along Grange Road.
You can still see the ‘long burrow’ like object that’s in one of my Bouchon/heli shots and the fencing it also identifiably the same. In the distance is indeed Thriplow church, although I agree that all the village churches are in the same style.
I therefore believe that Wyverfan has the location correct. If I had panned to my right in any of those pics I would have been looking at the hangars and control tower.

I can still remember Duxford with a lineup of Javelin’s in front of the hangars!
    When was that…about 1960?

    Postfade,

You had both Thriplow and Fowlmere chuches in your shots as shown, below. However, the landmark you cited, originally, was, indeed, Fowlmere.

Of more issue, is the ‘long bu(a)rrow’ which is in fact an historic remnant of the airfield. I’m sure someone on this forum will tell us its name but it was an earth bank with a brick built an internal passageway system surrounding three sides of a dispersal parking area. As it is now outside the airfield boundary and no one at the IWM seems to be particularly aware of it, it is being lost to nature and the rabbits.

    Thriplow Church

It has all changed but it does not look quite right….

..but there again neither does Duxford (St Johns) or Whittlesford.

I wonder if you can see Fowlmere from Grange Road?
