Please, can you post a scan of this sketch? I’d love to see it!

I’m sorry I don’t have a scanner (I’m way behind the times) The name of it was Project Grom. Perhaps a google search might help.

There is a little bit of truth in it. In the 1998-1999 edition of Combat Fleets of the World under Russia there was a entry for a future surface combatant with a very crude sketch. The data for it is similiar to what the CGI site has listed for its design. (Perhaps the CGI artist had a copy of the book) The whole program was just another “pie in the sky” project that the Russians just couldn’t afford. The design looks good.

I must admit the CVF is a neat looking ship with the two island set up. I hope they do get built. As for reconsidering catapults it will depend on the JSF program. If the UK pulls out then they would be limited to three CTOL aircraft. Rafale, Super Hornet or a naval Typhoon ( I don’t think we will see MiG-29K’s or Su-33’s in FAA colors). I know its been discussed on another thread about a naval Typhoon, would England have the funding to develop a naval Typhoon?

I stand corrected about the SA-12. Hey the Russians just cranked out two more SAM systems since my last post, so we’re up to SA-85 now!

The Russians have produced the largest selection of SAM systems. I think NATO is up to SA-20 or 21 for coding them. You could equip a country’s entire air defence grid with Russian systems. Hand held SA7/14/16/18 systems all the way up to the strategic SA-12 with ABM capabilitiy. I have said on another thread that I would use Russian systems for my entire air defense network.

If it had a regular internal bomb bay I think it would have been a good bomber. I guess it wasn’t feasible to redesign it when the linear bomb bay failed. It was a great recon platform.

The PA2 is the follow on carrier to the Charles De Gaulle. Originally she was supposed to be an improved version of the CDG (nuclear powered) but due to CDG’s techical problems and cost overruns the French redesigned the PA2 for conventional power. They had come up with their own design but in another cost saving move they joined the British CVF program. If everything goes as planned there will be three CVF’s built. Two for England with ski ramps and one for France with catapults.
As for her trip to India for scrapping its standard that any ship is stripped of any useful equipment before scrapping. Her hull will be seaworthy but she will be towed by an ocean going tug. The steel that is used in shipbuilding is very high quality so when she is scrapped the steel will be melted down and recast to build other ships. Hell, her steel maight even wind up in India’s new carrier that they are building.
