What Tangmere1940 said, I have close to 30 of them in storage which came from a place where there were hundreds a few years ago, some in woeful nick (cannot even open the case as the rubber has melted/fused the case shut, others in good condition – yours looks pretty good actually. I have a few that are slightly different in that the bakelite case has been substituted with a metal case – same shape but a more snug fit. Not sure why this was the case. A nice piece of gear though if it’s in good condition, it’s better than mine thats for sure !

I’d be curious too, but not just for Merlins – I collected a few boxes of Gipsy Major parts a couple of weeks ago and the crankcase and most other major parts in the collection were in the black finish – not something added later thats for sure !

Daniel / Phil has started his own thread on here about the same thing

Whatever the case may be I’m sure it will be a cracker when revealed, very curious about this, when Kermit says something like that, it must be pretty good – he didn’t mention he was off to look at crates in Burma by any chance 😀

A suprise indeed 😉 but then given it was in a box marked DH I guess I should not be suprised, though everything else in the box was Moth or Gipsy Major. Thanks for checking for me, appreciated as always….

    More Beau pics

I have been scanning hundreds upon hundreds of slides and negatives over the last few months from the collection belonging to Ash Briggs, much of it not seen before as far as I know, or maybe only to a very select few (great slides night indeed 😀 )

With his permission, here is a few shots of the Beau fuse that was recovered from inner suburban Melbourne, in a backyard (the story that I have been told is a doting father asked his daughter whether she would like a horse or an aeroplane – she went with the plane – if that’s true, good choice on her part !)

These pics were taken in 1981 and the mid fuse section is now on the Duxford Beau…..

Apologies for the quality, I have not attempted to clean up or edit them…

Other shot (yes yes its back to front, bleedin scanner) is of the Moorabbin Beau, unsure of date, but looks to have been just after the shed was built around it – Keith or Ash I’m sure you can correct me on this, there was no tag on the negative when I scanned it

Yes I’d forgotten that too, apologies. Based out western suburbs way now, check with the airports there, you’ll find him eventually…. 😉

Er, Phil, as mentioned in a previous answer, your question was addressed in the first page of the now locked thread on WIX. Nothing more really needs to be added here as your query has been addressed ie there are at least three or four lots of parts with ID provenance. Maybe more, certainly not less, but not full airframes or any such thing like that…

The location of these has been made public in abovementioned forum as well. Given that Bob has done a lot of his work out of Pt Cook I see no reason why you wouldn’t ring Pt Cook and ask even if just for Bob’s contact details, as I said, they go above and beyond in their efforts to help me with my research and project work and really do try and help where they can. Or better still just look up Mustang Joy Flights Melbourne on the web and contact Bob via that. Helluva lot easier and saves potential issues from the naysayers – “haters gonna hate” etc…

Yes indeed, ring Pt Cook and ask for Bob, sure they can find him there 🙂 As it stands in my limited knowledge a number of the parts/remains/sections etc are offsite at a restoration facility as mentioned on the other forum, but sure the RAAF can inform of what is where, and how many. I do a bit of volunteer work at said place as well as work on my own project there but as I opted to not get interested in Spitfires I have not really paid much attention to that side of things 🙂

Phil, instead of posting such things here and on other forums leading to massive slagoff fests, why not simply ring or email Pt Cook and ask the question? They are more than helpful with queries from researchers and restorers & you are more likely to have a definitive answer for your query.

At any rate your question was answered on the other forum by two people in among the other fluff.

Finally got it to work tonight and as I mentioned on another forum just now, I found a hit that was on a church around the corner from where I lived in Raynes Park. A babysitter showed me a picture of the shell of the church – I was six years old in 1977 when living there but those sort of things stick in your mind – thanks Mrs Clark 🙂 Amazing site though, quite an undertaking I would think…..

ZRX61, Please do not judge the majority of Aussie on the words of one Daniel/Liberator/Migace/etc. The man is a fool and has proven that in many, many posts across a multitude of forums.

    John Ward

+1 There are a good many of us down under that actually get on with projects and research without the need for trumpeting about “secret business” and nothing other than info “passed on” , no pics, no evidence, nada… I totally understand ZRX61’s comment though, it’s silly attention seeking stuff like this that gives us all a bad name 😡

I have found the forum group to be above and beyond the call of duty a number of times when trying to work parts out that I have picked up or even questions on numbers, lists etc.. and yes, some parts go onto some auction site thingy but most I put up here are in my own collection in the hope of building something one day…

There will always be people like this original poster going for the “lookit me I’ve got hot news” angle but I come on here to read and LEARN as I am still what many of you would refer to as a newcomer / youngun, and what I have been able to learn so far has been invaluable, and gratefully appreciated…

Still, the bottom line is, if you see a post from this person, rather than open it and get razzed up by a non-event, simply don’t open the thread, saves you a bit of angst 🙂

AM, that’s it indeed. Fantastic job spotting that (apologies for the pics dramas, they were supposed to open up as full images)

Much appreciated to everyone for the help, it really proves invaluable when trying to work out the contents of a box (or 20 in this case) 🙂

Whitley – PM on its way
