It’s a challenging one especially when some of the younger kids give the controls a right old working over.

We have a number of aircraft open to sit in regularly (Firefly, Sea Venom, F-111 Module under supervision, Winjeel, Dove) but have also restored the interior of the Viscount so you can sit in it, plus one of our volunteer members rewired and set up the cockpit so all the panels light up like they did (you can press buttons etc to operate various banks), and he took it one step further and has a media player running on loop with the sound of the autopilot system going so it sounds like the aircraft is alive. Oh and the best bit is that he also has the engine fire alarm switch working and if a kid is misbehaving and they flick that, it stops them in a flash 😀
Said member is almost complete converting all the backlit panels and gauges in the DC-9 simulator over to LED. Looks so good film crews are using it, he has done a top job.

With the other aircraft, it is simply a matter of requesting. The hardest one to access is the Beaufighter, from the belly up, and that is a tough call for older visitors. Inside is not much better, its cramped to say the least. Other aircraft however we are building access stairs so people will be able to walk up and peer in.

Like everything it’s always time and money.

    Cheers

    Very good news.
How well did it come apart for the journey Ewan?

    Rob

    Hey Rob

All went perfectly until the wing pins. Pretty notorious by the sounds of it, but the first one was ok. Then we ended up breaking every single one of our pullers we had brought for the journey, so after much deliberation between ourselves and talking with the guy in charge on base we made the decision to get the fire recuse unit in to help us cut the spar. We were gutted by this, but had no choice. Ultimately it means a little bit more work at our end when we re assemble the wings etc, but no one visiting would notice the difference anyway. Sometimes you have to make hard choices and when there is a five hour drive each way and time restraints to have the aircraft off base, we simply have to do what we can to get the aircraft home

    Cheers

Made it to the Museum just now 🙂 Here is a cracking shot of it last night on stopover just south of the VIC/NSW border. Thanks to Gerard Blom for the shot.

P+P and I have been chatting about the wheels on the phone – one more piece of info emerged

Stores Ref number appears to be T27A/1399 – The T may simply be the Australian designation of the A.M. number . I have had a hunt around online but not come up with anything yet

Anyone able to narrow this down ?

Thanks guys for all the info – the other DH98 tailwheel in the collection I referred to was AH7049 and was a Canadian made one (can’t remember the name) I will see what else I can find in the Museum Technical Library with relation to the numbers, The “teeth” on the inner certainly look Mossie though. A good mystery to have !

I’m guessing its the wheel I have up on evilbay at the moment. I had a look around but could not find anything on it. It was in a lot of four one being a DH98 tailwheel in great condition which I gave to Powerandpassion – heres a few pics with all the info I could find on them (I didnt want to look like a plank and ask for all the info just to shove up on auction, I do try and avoid taking advantage of others help ):

The inner rim appears to be AHO2066, cannot tell and I am a long way from home.

I should also point out the lower left of the overlay is the location of the smelters and the rail lines that took all the aluminium bars back to Melbourne to be made into other things such as cars and domestic items like pots and pans. Some of that ground still shows evidence of slag pits and some also show signs of chemical affection

Was funny, some of the stuff that used to be in my grandfathers old shed reappeared on some sellers tables – he would be having a right chuckle at that. There was a fantastic WW1 timber camera case I spotted, some not too run of the mill gauges, which always makes for a nice change, not that I would know what they were ! One guy had a great set of manuals and older model kits so he did a brisk trade, an 1830 casing, Curtiss Electric Prop hub/motor, working B24 APU units etc, Boston Throttle Quad, Neptune control column and seat, DC-3 seat, Oxford seat, Tiger Moth panel, Blast tubes from a Vengeance and unfinished tubes for the Beau, lots of plugs, wires, switches etc so those in need of things for projects were certainly finding what they want.

Absolutely going to run it again next year, I think we are developing something here which has always suffered the tyranny of distance in this country. Bit of fine tuning and away we go.

Thanks to everyone who came, this event is certainly growing and we had a great day weather wise for it. Some great items from various stallholders all off to new homes. Certainly going to be on again next year.

People will care more about fluffy animals that some old planes and it would be bad publicity for the museum -and very probably illegal- if that harm befalls some rare species or someone’s pet cat.

And here is the incredible quandry – the birds are listed as a protected species yet also listed as a declared pest. Damned if you do…..

Deterrents will be the way to go. We will have to try a few things out and see what works best. Naturally when the collection is all indoors it won’t be a problem but with the weather being hot and all at the moment the birds have swarmed from regional areas into the suburbs and clearly causing problems. Dunno where they go at night, and I must admit I’m surprised they don’t worry about the GA aircraft etc at the airport here (which is the third busiest in Australia in terms of traffic ) Fearless little tykes !

Ah the old BanSuk stuff – says a lot about me as my parents put it on and I loved it ! Must give it a go. We are going to do inspections on the DC3, Viscount and Freighter this week to see what damage they have caused.
