    Hi Phantom,

I’ve just found the copy of Aeroplane Mag. with the AC-47 in it. I can scan it & e-mail it to you, if you’re interested.

Thought you might like this night shot (pun intended!).

RE: Flypast Cockpit Festival At Newark Air Museum

    Hi All,
There’s also a Lancaster week-end, to celebrate the 60th annivesary, at Newark on the 18th & 19th May, so I’ve been told. Can anyone confirm this?

    RE: DC-3/C-47

    Hi Phantom,
The DC-3 could be landed perfectly OK on land. The bit of the video, I mentioed, started off by looking at these bloody great floats (on dry land)& then panned up to the the Dak! The guy they interviewed said there were only 5 made, he didn’t say how many were still flying. The floats didn’t make much difference to the handling, either, just made the controls slightly more docile, than the usual DC-3.
If you’re interested the video was called Wings of World War Two & on the cover there’s a flight of P-51’s. All the usual Allied aircraft were featured- Mossie, Spit, Lanc, P-51, Avenger, Hellcat, B-17, B24 etc. Each aeroplane had it’s own bit of history & plenty of archive meterial.

    RE: Westland Whirlwind Fighter- Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Tony,
Interesting project, good luck with it. I don’t know if it’s much help but I see, in this issue of Flypast there’s a Midland Counties Books advert showing a 4+ Publication book on the Whirlwind.
What’s the history with Whirlwind, why did it not go into large scale production & serve with more RAF Squadrons?

    RE: DC-3/C-47

    Hi All,
Just out of interest- Just been looking at a video, of WW2 aircraft, & the DC-3 was one of these aircraft. On the video it showed a DC-3 with FLOATS! According to the owner, the US had 5 prototypes made, the idea was to supply troops in such places as Burma with supplies, by landing on large rivers etc. Another feather in the DC-3’s cap!

    Cheers,

    Phantom,
There was a big article in one of the Aircraft Mags, last year sometime, on the AC-47. I’ll try & find it. Lots of info & some very good piccies!
I’m decorating at the moment (YUCK!!!!), so you may have to wait, a little bit. Mrs. Neilly’s just taken dog for a walk, so good excuse for a break!

    C U soon,

Check his scalp for a tatoo 666! If he also likes to listen to O Fortuna & you christened him Damien- Then you in big Doh Doh!
    Only joking
As for myself? I’ll be at a model air show, up near Withernsea, so I hope those of you going to Duxford have a great time.
Talking of Duxford & large scale model aircraft, there’s an LMA airshow there, it’s in either June or July, should be a good week-end. If anyones interested I’ll look up the correct date.

    Hi Glenn,
My favorite Mossie? No problem deciding that one, a B IX. The greatest of them all- Fbar-Freddie (213 sorties).

    RE: RAF Badges

    Hi Keith,
Both your above answer are correct, having just gone through several PFF related books looking for PFF badges on aircrew uniforms. It seems the majority were worn on the left breast pocket flap (as you describe), but there are a couple of photos that clearly show the PFF badge between the wings brevet & medal ribbons.
If you need a definitive answer, I can do some phone calling & try & find out.

    Hi Moggy,
That Mosquito B.35 at Liverpool Airport is now at the Mosquito Museum, TA 634. So in a way she did stand the test of time.

    Hi Ant,
Apologies for not saying, Thanks earlier. The excuse: I was about to reply, when I got orders from Mrs. Neilly- WE’RE off to B&Q (this is the bit where Neilly, 6’4″ ex Rugby player, etc etc. quakes in his wellies & says “yes dear”, to Mrs. Neilly 5’4″). I quitely follow, like the preverbial lamb to the slaughter, knowing I WILL be decorating the kitchen, soon. I then forgot to say thank you to you next time I came online.

    Many thanks,
    Neilly
