RE: 8th AF, B17 battle damage

It’s amazing how some of these aircraft made it home, with so much damage. If you get a chance, have a look at a book called Path Finders at War by Chaz Bowyer. There are some photos of some really badly Lancs & Hali’s. One picture which is truely amazing is of a Halifax with the whole of section, forward of the canopy, missing. The pilot landed the Halifax safely back in England!

Dezz, all I say is you’re a man after my own heart. I agree with you(Mrs Neilly Wouldn’t, she been there!), nothing can more romantic than a bit of nostalgia around a superb a piece of aeroplane history. Can’t see the problem!

RE: What WW2 story ? Update

Quite obvious! The part of the dog will be played by Lassie (CGI, for obvious reasons of taste!). The dog will be sent on a do or die mission to take a message to HQ that reinforcements are needed! The kid will have a degree in radio/radar & will come up with an ingenious idea, that none of the adults will have thought about, to beat the enemy. I also believe Malta, for reasons of continuity, is now just off the coast of Florida. The US public wouldn’t know any different, unless there was a theme park there, anyway!

    Hi Merlin,
I’ve had a look at your web site & I think it’s very good.

    Ashley,
Not wishing to get to involved, But… Ashley, you might be a girl in a male dominated etc. etc., but perhaps you should look at your ratings, because there are quite a few of us on this forum who are very interested in what you have to say.

    All the very best,

    RE: Vultee Aircraft

According to the article on the Vengeance, the British & Australians used this aircraft in China, Burma & India. From what I read it was probably the most accurate dive bomber of the war.
This aeroplane certainly ain’t going to win best looking aircraft of WW 2 competition!

The Vengence saw service. In the last LMA Journal, the model of the month was a Vultee Vengence. I’ll have a look & see what the history of this aeroplane was, within the RAF.

Yes, I saw it when you first posted it. The list doesn’t get updated till someone adds a new post.
    Good piccie, though.

    RE: What WW2 story ?

To a certain degree I agree with you, Lancman. However, it would be good to see Dambusters in colour (although B&W is very atmospheric!) & the special effects could be better.
I think I’ll dig the film out this afternoon, turn up the central heating & crack open a nice cold beer, & settle down to doing not much of anything, except watch the gogle box!!!

    Happy viewing

    RE: What WW2 story ?

    [updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-02-02 AT 09:59 AM (GMT)]Ross,
I agree with you on that mission. To know your chances of survival were virtually nil, was extreme courage! Then to overcome all the odds & get back alive, was nothing short of amazing.
A film about W/c ‘Bob’ Braham- the most decorated Fighter Command pilot, might not go a miss or similar airman.
I wouldn’t mind seeing films based on books like:
    Pursuit through Darkened Skies
    Day of the Typhoon
As for remakes? I think I agree with Ashley. But, then again, to see a film full of Lancasters, doing a remake of Dambusters? Perhaps it might work, provided it didn’t get Hollywoodenised & stayed very British.

    RE: What WW2 story ?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-02-02 AT 09:09 PM (GMT)]I agree with that one! It does look pretty daft- an aeroplane flying through an explosion. Especially when one considers effects of real bombs could be felt 4-5,000 ft up! Hence, the use of delayed action bombs, at low level.
The films I’d like to see, would be based on:
    Banff Wing
    Night Fighters
    Specialist raids like Amiens
Bomber Command. (perhaps a remake of ‘Target for Tonight’)

    RE: A-26 Invader

I took the picture in the early 80’s. I’d forgotten the tragic events (the old grey matter is about knackered!). The picture was taken at Leicester Air Show (Stoughton). I have a couple more pictures of this aeroplane, which if anyones interested I’ll post.

    Cheers all,
    Neilly
