Think this was my fifth Legends, and despite the tempestuous weather, and the great disappointment of the Fury and Nimrods scrubbing, it was the best show I’ve been to. Some teriffic flying all round, from an amazing Spitfire opening to the magnificent balbo finale.

Highlights were the gorgeous Seafire, my first encounter with a DB-powered “109”, and the jaw-dropping Blenheim formation.

One slight worry:does anyone know what happened to the Desert Buchon? It was conspicuously absent from the circuit after the Balbo…

As promised, and posted without comment, here is the Barracuda display at Yeovilton today.

Oh bother! I’m at Yeovilton on Saturday and Leg Ends on Sunday. Well, hope it’ll buck up for both days!

This does seem to be turning into a bit of a circular argument. I’m going to Yeovilton, I’ll take my camera and try and see if there’s any visible progress.
The whole elevator/oleo saga does seem to be a bit fishy. I find it very hard to believe that the Bluebird team are at fault, after all what motive could they have for hanging onto the parts? It’s not looking likely they’re going to get the project back, and at any rate they’re clearly intelligent enough to realise that holding an elevator ransom is not the way to do it.
However, it also seems unlikely that the FAAM would falsify their loss, other than some spiteful attempt to smear/frame Bluebird et al, which seems a pretty stupid idea for a national museum with government funding in the current political climate. Not to mention that it would be behaviour so childish and malicious that I for one can’t believe the NMRN really capable of it.

So what’s gone on? As someone above mentioned, a tail oleo and an elevator aren’t exactly small bits of kit.

I’m a Vulcan supporter but I don’t fit in the above category!
Seriously considering freeloading on Sunday, not something I’d ordinarily do, so if I do I end up standing on the footpath, I might buy a SVAS membership in penance…

Part of the problem surely has to also include duplication and rationalisation. Imagine if it possible to take a fully rational, ruthless look at the entire preservation scene in the UK as one resource. You’d find that, although far from adequate to save everything, the existing covered space in UK museums could be used much more effectively and many more types could go indoors.
In theory, all you’d need to do is cull some massively over-represented aircraft. There are a great number of Jet Provosts, Vampire T11s, Canberras, Harriers, and Hunters (or worse, plastic models of Spitfires) filling up museum space. A determined cull of these, leaving just 1-2 representative, best-quality examples of each sub-type or variant, and you’d have much more space right away for getting one or two Heralds, Victors, Ambassadors, VC-10s and the like undercover and protected.

Of course, this can never happen without some kind of UK aviation dictatorship forcing museums to cull airframes and move exhibits, which in most ways would be totally unacceptable. Every museum understandably wants to hang on to as many of its exhibits as possible, after all, they’re what keeps people coming in the door. But it’s sad that this sort of thing results in aircraft like the Flixton Valetta, or the Coventry BP.111 rotting outside, while endless duplications of more fortunate types fill up hangars.

It’s an extremely long way from Borneo to Duxford, and this thread has kept me alive the last few months, and got me all excited that I’ll be home in time for Legends.
DCW, Pen Pusher, Duxman et al, please post what you like. Most of us will lap it up!

Must say I scoffed when this appeared on the Legends participation page. Well done to all concerned for finally getting it in the air so I can eat my hat! Looks pretty gorgeous 🙂

Crikey! That looks better than I expected! Isn’t there a Glenn Martin Museum somewhere in the States? Might they be interested if RAF say no?

Can’t help wishing for an RAF 2TAF scheme, although it’d have to represent a Mitchell III with that turret where it is. Did many IIIs see service over the Continent?

This year saw a number of firsts at the air show, including the flight of a replica V1 flying bomb

How did landing work with that?! Did the owners of Omaka have a big hole in the tarmac to fill?!

Seriously though, from what I’ve seen of the Knights of the Sky exhibition, this looks like a winner.

I’m overdue a thanks to the continued efforts of the regular posters here. I’m sat typing this a very long way from Cambridgeshire (Sabah, formerly British North Borneo, about 50 miles into the jungle from Tawau), and it’s lovely to still keep up with the wonderful goings on at dux…

Looking forward to seeing that HAC Hurri in its BOB markings this year, 303 squadron was a superb choice!
