Thanks for that! I had no idea it was part of a wider Arnhem celebration, and had assumed that they’d be overflying the old airfield on account of its 617 squadron connection.
Fingers crossed for Woodhall Spa tomorrow. Anyone got any advice as to where I should park/stand?
Very nice!
What a find! I can’t help wishing it stays “as is” and is displayed locally in Orkney rather than disappearing into another airworthy restoration, but I’m not hopeful 🙁
It can’t be for the SNP Air Force, it’s too left wing.
My candidate for Post of the Year 2014 😀
It’s a bit awkward from Oxford. I might just make the Woodhall Spa flypast next Sat from my girlfriend’s house nr Ely…
Oh well, that’s my two goes at seeing them gone then! Crosswinds at Eastbourne and now the engine.
You can’t win ’em all.
Glad they got down OK, and serious kudos to the NX611 chaps for sending the engine.
But there weren’t any other bombers. The Lancaster did everything! It could fly supersonic too.
That must be Hudson FK466. Coming along nicely! 😀
RIP Sir!
Hi Howard,
Just wondering to what degree are you needing to make everything from scratch? I’m guessing the floor structure is new-build, but are there any original seats/controls/instruments available for the Ashton?
TFC…are you listening?!
Hooray! Well done to all concerned-presumably this is the only other outside Cosford preserved so far?
Is it one of the last few service aircraft retired a few years back, or has it been used for GI?
I’d hazard that some white elephants are best left to the history books-I’d probably leave the Brabazon and Princess where I found them, along with the Botha and Lerwick.
But I’d definitely grab the Whirlwind, G-AGOI, some Typhoons, British-built Beauforts and Beaufighters, a Whitley or two, some of the myriad “lost” Axis types, a BOAC Comet 1…and enough sapphire engines to get a Javelin airworthy.
I think I’d use my flux capacitor to go back and preserve a few “lost” types for posterity. Short Empire flying boats, Whitleys, He177, Fairey Fox, Mitsubishi G3m, Do.X, Felixstowe F.5, Miles Marathon, stuff like that.
