I’m just surprised to see China developing the Varyag for an aircraft carrier of her own considering the pro sub faction in control of the PLAN today. Maybe there are new leadership changes or so.

IMO, pro sub faction still in domination simply because it’s the best and most economic way to deter mighty CVGs. However, PLAN now realizes in the sea, there are not all the time only the CVGs they have to face. Plenty of chances for PLAN to encounter 2nd tie Navy forces in east China sea or even South China sea. Where and on which occasion, the presence of a big A/C carrier is decisive.

Continuing previous thread, some news on Chinese shipborne SAM’s

Kanwa Defense Reviews’s latest report confirms the new HHQ16 SAM will install on the 3rd and onwards type054 FFG( 054A) .

According to Kanwa , the speculated range of HHQ16 is around 20 km, the it is ” hot launched” VLS missile, probably guided by phased array Radar. The HHQ16 missile system is developed by Chinese but the appearance looks like Russian’s Shtil-1

The construction of 054 FFG apparently delayed after only finished 2 ( No 525 & 526) because of the prolonged final certification job of the HHQ16. With the HHQ16 finally ready to enter service. The next round of mass construction of Type 054FFG may soon start.

The HQ-16 is said to be able to share the same launcher with Shtil. How exactly the relation between the HQ-16 and Shtil-1 is still unclear. What we have known is the HQ-17 is chinese Version of Russian Tor-M1 and HQ-9 is indigenized S300.

One thing quite sure is from next building of new FFG in Chinese shipyards onwards, it will no longer see the disappointing HHQ-7 on the ships. the new VLS hot launch? SAM will replace the HHQ7.

The exported version of Chinese FFG currently is only based on PLAN’s 053 FFG rather than the latest 054 model

From the track record: Pakistan Navy’s future F22 frigate is based on PLAN’s 053H3 FFG and Thailand’s 2 OPVs ordered from China are also based on type 053H3 FFG.

However, the just surfaced news of the HHQ16 from china’s various website also suggests the 053H4 FFG may install the HHQ16 as well.
