    Maybe he defected to russia?

On a serious note, hope he is found alive and well even if the odds are against him 🙁

i thought it was supposed to have missiles installed? so you are saying they have none of them and are only equipped with a gun? then what’s the point of having them?

They are supposed to have them.. But every year the integration is delayed. 10 years after the first ship was laid down the MoD still have not decided when to start doing the weapon tests

No problem in terms of signature. Next iteration (version 5) will should also yield roughly 10 fold RCS reduction due to the removal of the mast, railings, and repositioning/conformal sensors. (Whenever version 5 will see the light of day.. is up to debate though ;))

The problem lies in that *ANY* weapon except the bofors gun is missing. That includes Torpedo 45 against submarines, RBS-15 against ships, and any SAM system.

And then there are other “minor” things like Link 16 integration still missing. Helicopter hangar scrapped, etc. I could go on for awhile ..

There where plans for frigates but they where scrapped a few years ago.
Which might have been a good choice seeing how disastrous the visby corvette program has been handled.

An example could be that the delta-canard design that was the basis of LM’s MRF/CALF was changed into a more conventional tailplane design.

The reason for this was that they assesed that the delta-canard design coupled with the lift-fan solution would have been considered to risky and they would potentially have lost the contract. Which is a shame, but understandable.

Kudos for that! Nice compilation. Only negative thing is that I had to google translate it, but it worked out fine 🙂

Strange? I would say smart and affordable.

In the best of worlds having cheek arrays are a better technical solution. But I would would rather have the 90% of the capability than aiming for a more expensive solution that I in the end cannot afford, with the end result being that I get a less capable radar system.

Yeah, they are flying a sub-scale demonstrator. I remember reading about it earlier, cannot remember where though.

Interesting note about CARABAS technology. Do you know more details about it ? It must be some kind of software piece that is usually coupled with CARABAS that is applicable somehow to the data captured from Erieye or any of the other sensors apart of the package. (Seeing as the basis for the actual concept of CARABAS is SAR mapping in VHF band, which is not attainable by the T/R modules in Erieye which works S-Band).

RBS-70, BAMSE and the alike is not regardes as an offensive system either. The argumentation for this is that they are used to protect national air space and not
for offensive raids. That’s what I meant with bypassing the laws using creative specification of the systems.

US cannot embargo the Gripen engine to countries it is ready to sell it’s own similair systems to, per an agreement signed in 1999 (or 2000? do not remember the date).

RBS-70 was sold to Iran by Singapore, not by Sweden.

Anyhow. Like Arrows said, lets go back to the focus of this thread.

Exports are decided by ISP (http://www.isp.se/sa/node.asp?node=410) which by law is govern by pretty tight rules, but in practice is not due to creative specification of different systems.
For instance Erieye is not considered a offensive system and can therefore be exported to a broader range of countries. To examplify Gripens to Pakistan was not given export clearance, but Erieye was.
Same applies to pretty much every sensor suite, like Giraffe AMB, MAW-300 etc..

Oh. And those interested in finding out what this and future/past “secret customers” can check out ISP’s annual reports which specify the value for every contract, to what country, the past year.

If I were a betting man I would bet that you will see a follow-on order for giraffe’s and a C4I solution being announced in the coming 2-3 months

Well no, the press release does not give any numbers at all. It just specifies that the SAAB 2000 AWE&C system consists of an SAAB 2000 aircraft coupled with an Erieye radar.

The amount of such systems in the sale is not disclosed per agreement with the customer.
