The first lockheed propsal for CALF/JAST/JSF with the delta canard design, pitch thrust vectoring and M1.5 supercruise would have been very interesting. It was more optimized for interception but stil met the STOVL requirements. At the end it was dropped due to the percived risk of introducing the lift fan solution required for JSF with the by US means unconvential delta-canard design.

They have ordered Erieye AWACS to serve a intermin solution which delivery is imminent.

Long term wise they are in talks with SAAB about a latest iteration Erieye solution as well as talks about UAE funded further development of Erieye (360-degree radar coverage) and with Norhtrop with MESA (which seem to be in a good position).

A cool futher-development of the F-16XL was the the F-16X “Falcon 2000” concept which did not have a veritcal stabilizer and with 3D thrust vectoring.

Never left the drawing board though.

I concur.. But the chances of RAFALE winning in INDIA is not very high either. .BRAZIL is a sure thing with LULA winning the next election in October.

Lula cannot win the election. He has already been elected for the max time possible. However, the same politcal party that he represents has a strong chanche of winning.

Anyhow, even if they don’t win that wont change a thing. Rafale has this in the bag.

in your dreams, lets see some links to back yourself, i have given dassault fox three links to where the aesa antenns is simply added to the 1995? PESA backend, only recently here
thales can do a decent radar if given the money, they havent been given the money

Ulta reliable radar did not use MMIC/GaAs. It is not comparable to any modern aesa radar.

I forgot to mention, if you want a read up on Thales TRMs and what they have in store you can read the fulltext version of their presentation from Microwave Technology and Techniques workshop 2008 here:

Posted on the MRCA thread but appropriate here as well : AESA from Thales p 32-33

Thales does have an interesting roadmap. If you look at the product portfolio they stil lag behind the US quite a bit though. RBE2 being brick TRM opposed to tile TRMs for e.x. apg-81. But the future sure looks bright and interesting, hope they get the funding :).

They choose two Brazilian companies that have no previous work with high performance combat aircraft as partners. According the press releases, Akaer was supposed to do the Gripen wing project. This is not serious because the only previous Akaer experience with combat planes is the AT-29 Super Tucano, a turboprop attack-trainer aircraft. No one with some experience at military aviation affairs took this seriously. It is obviously a public relations statement to enhance SAAB position at Brazilian press. I know Akaer sent 20 engineers to SAAB to “participate” at Gripen development, but it also sent 20 engineers to Altran in France…

ATMOS, the Selex partner, only did meteorological radars. It was supposed to do, according SAAB’s releases, the air combat mode of the Raven radar. Obviously, it is not possible.

Allt this boo-hoo and yet they where ranked above Dassault and Boeing by the Brazilian air industry as well as in overall offsets. I wonder what happend there?

It seems to me that you think the brazilian industry is so inferior it is unable to grasp any new technology. That’s great. Might aswell skip ToT and offets then.

While this rumour might have merit (and I hope it does — as it would be a great for european aviation) I remeber only a year ago the Indian press said that Rafale had been eliminated.

I for one think we will get quite some rumours in the coming weeks, probably some contradicting the others.
