The JAS 39E is not a classically stealthy aircraft, but the development contract stipulates a significantly lower radar cross-section (RCS) than the JAS 39C. In conjunction with the all-new Saab-developed electronic warfare system, which uses gallium nitride antenna technology and is described as an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sensor in its own right, and the new Selex-ES Brite Cloud expendable active decoy, the reduced RCS is expected to allow the fighter to survive against advanced threats, including the Sukhoi T-50 fighter and “double-digit” surface-to-air missiles, while avoiding the cost and risk of an F-35-type stealth configuration.

I don’t see the difference, really. This is just a rumour / leak as well. Nothing official / confirmed. I would not be surprised at all if it is just BS.
Appears I was wrong 😎

I remember reading that the Rafale was out in India as well . . .
Small google translated snippet from http://www.svd.se/naringsliv/nyheter/sverige/halften-svenskt-nar-nya-gripen-byggs_8647454.svd :
– The biggest change in the past is done with the systems for electronic warfare. There we have a completely new design and it is the single biggest lift with the Gripen E says Lennart Sindahl Head of Saab’s business area for the flight.
Absolutely. Rumours should always be taken with a grain of salt. As you said, time will tell.
Nice to see the Chalmers GaN HEMT process finally becoming commercial. The EW/EA capability of the Gripen E will be substantial improvement over C/D.
P.S. A little birdie told me that Gripen E will have have a quite different shape than the Gripen DEMO due to RCS reduction.
I’m confused, perhaps someone can clear it up for me.
Is the AESA they’re looking to integrate (seems to be called E-Scan at the moment, its hard to keep up with the word soup) based on one of the earlier projects like CAESAR or Bright Adder? I remember there were 2 separate development efforts going on with Bright Adder apparently having a lot of EW functionality. Have these now fuse together?
That would be interesting to know. The bright adder programme is more ambitious, being multi-channel (ala APG-81/Raven ES-05/..) vs single-channel (like AN/APG-77 et al).
Me neither. Will be interesting to see. The picture I posted is quite old & has been published publically which should be taken into consideration. But the plan then was to cannibalize existing Gripens, which does sound famililair.
This is what I was referencing earlier, studied as a possible Gripen upgrade years ago. Some features might (or might not..) be seen on Gripen E. We’ll see in a few months :p

The picture posted is fan made, I would not put much faith in it if I where you. A few years ago however SAAB presented a mockup model of a future Gripen model, it incorporated signature reductions measures while still retaining the vertical tail and external weapons. DSI inlets & faceted radome & changes to canards and wings & LO pylons.
Well. No.
Russia have during the last week done this twice, one time including active electronic warfare and the other time they where inside a small pocket of international airspace between two islands.
That SIGINT flight coincided with a large Swedish exercise. Such flights are to be expected, just like Swedish Gulfstream SIGINT aircraft is deployed at larger Russian exercises..
As a news update, I just read that the SwAF denies any EW during the Russian excercise.
The exercise itself is nothing special, standard Soviet modus operandi which has been revived by Russia under the latter years. It is not like Sweden is totally innocent in these matters either. During to up to atleast the late 80ies, mockattacks of up to 50+ Attack-Viggens, covered by Lansen EW aircraft and with SIGINT ships against the Soviet baltic states were conducted when threat libraries had to be updated.
But the fact that the SWaF has detoriated to such a grade that there is no air policing available 24/7 is shocking.
PS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyPsqsH8I4M – The russians have a good sense of humour. 🙂
Embarassing not to have pilots available 24/7.
According to media reports, the excercise simulated attacks against StriC Grizzly and StriC Cobra, which are the two remanining air force command and control facilities of the SwAF. Furthermore it is reported that electronic warfare was used against surveillance radars.
