That’s correct. But that has always been the case – the Swedish Gripen E/F purchase has never been conditional on a Swiss purchase. Only that there is a clause in the contract that it might be cancelled or delayed in case Switzerland (or another potential partner nation) does not go ahead with their intended purchase.

Regarding Swedish Gripen E’s being newly built, from what I’ve gathered the structural changes are more exstensive than on the Gripen DEMO, which excludes C/D aiframes for reuse. It will be interesting to see when pictures of the final configuration arrives.

Silly video. Funny to see people so upset about Gripen VS Su-35 though. It is a commercial video after all. 😉

Regarding Gripen vs Su-35, I remember a few years back when SAAB did simulations where Gripen dominated Su-35 BVR. The main factor in those simulations were Meteor’s performance over R-77. With a Russian BVRAAM in the Meteor class the scores would have been different. (Or maybe not — manufactors have creative ways to tilt simulations to their advantage.)

What a cheesy video. Nonetheless interesting to see what will be announced in January.

Gripen E configuration can’t be changed for a few years in my opinion. SAAB has to deliver to Sweden and Switzerland according to specifications already outlined.

That configuration is still not yet decided

this debate about danmark, dont forget that greenland and Faroe islands are danish and will need at some extent an AF to guaranteeing its sovereignty.

    +1.

And itt will get even more important if the hype about Greenland’s natural resouces is correct.

Bots. The same kind that follows you on Twitter etc.

I have zero of these, but then again I’m not a very frequent poster either. 😉

@ Sintra it depends on who you ask. Some people I have spoken to claim the technology freeze for the METEOR has effectively put the missile in the stone age with regard to ‘software related bits’. It will be interesting to see how well the METEOR tests in the comings years.

Thats a clear contradiction of what I’ve heard first hand from SAAB Bofors Dynamics personell involved with Meteor.

If Denmark goes for a fighter at all, I think it will be either the F-35 or the SH. I strongly doubt they would go for Gripen. I think they would rather have 12 F-35 than 24 Gripen.

Look at what happened in Norway…

This is exactly what will happen. Gripen has very slim chanches in Denmark. IMHO anyone who thinks otherwise underestimates US pressure. I’d be happy to be wrong though. But I’m pessimistic in this case. 🙂

See this small excerpt from the wikileaks us embassy leaks for examble:

“–Talk about the impact on the relationship carefully. Deciding our line on this was critical, given Norwegian sensitivities. We needed to avoid any appearance of undue pressuring (which was construed as threatening NORWAY in its sovereign decision-making process), but we couldn’t let stand the view that the choice didn’t matter for the relationship. We opted for choosing the JSF will maximize the relationship as our main public line. In private, we were much more forceful.

I bet Denmark go for the Gripen……I think it will all turn out a bit Eurovision !!

Unlikely IMHO. Despite economic woes I think they are bound for JSF. But hey – they did operate Draken ages ago, so it’s not entirely implausible.

Er… Gripen is eliminated after technical evaluation but the aircraft meets all MRCA requirements???

Sounds to me that RMAF can’t afford the others, so the criteria have been changed so that Gripen DOES meet requirements. Wonder if this selection will go the way the Swiss one went – get some temporary C/D’s to allow Fulcrums to be retired in 2015 then buy some E/F’s when the budget is there.

Maybe because no aircraft has been eliminated? You conveniently left out this part of the article
    [..]
Rodzali denied that Gripen and Sukhoi were no longer considered for the MRCA programme as “we are still evaluating all of the aircraft”.
He also denied that RMAF had ranked the aircraft in the technical evaluation.

And if the price doesn’t increase too much. All those goodies surely will come at a cost.

    Nic

SAAB CEO claims a ~10% price drop vs C/D. Not sure how realistic that is though.
