Is that the guy in the Ivory Coast you’re referring to (or whatever way you spell it in French)?;)
Didn’t he also build a huge new airport in the West African jungle, and specified that it should be able to operate Concorde??:eek:
Nope that was Mobutu in Gbadolite (his home village also called the Versailles of the jungle).
Well personally I wouldn’t call Gaddafi´s strategy senseless perhaps a little expensive. After all it helped him to both keep his airforce operational during years in isolation and help out his African Allies. Another few contenders for senseless purchases:
Eritrean MiG-29s
Ivorian MiG-23s
Namibian F-7s
This simply must be one of those stupid journo-mistakes that crop up from time to time to call their whole profession into question:

Frankly, if this is true it can compete for the weirdest military acquisition prize for 2008*.
* perhaps we could come up with some sort of title for a prize like that (the Pinochet… or some other dictator famous for buying unusual, often useless, kit).
Veeery nice idea. My favorite would be: “The rusty Yahya Jammeh globe”
That’s the Gambian dictator who milked the peanut-reliant economy of his tiny country to buy a single Georgian Su-25s that hasn’t moved a centimeter on the local tarmac since then.
Well I still think it is a confusion with their MiG-29s though…
Wow finally! The last traces of the Ugandan Israeli cooperation before Idi’s rise to power. Hmm I wanted to buy that one, well again it failed due to this f++++n’ US credit card fetishism 😡
From what country will it be?
Could it be a French machine from Djibouti?
BTW isn’t there even a private company operating Huns for target towing duties? (outsourcing rules :dev2:)
WOW 😮 never knew Quatar used Huns!
What is the story behind them?
AFAIK this deal was scrapped due to Belarus financial problems (mainly caused by gas prices)
How about the MiG23UB?
Tanzania may be a candidate for the oldest combat jet still serving in a combat role, the F-6. Tanzania’s F-6s were seen flying at a parade in 2006 or 2005.
I doubt that most of these countries which received MiG-15s and MiG-17s still have them in service. They all have more modern types and I would think, with limited budgets, the newer aircraft would get priority for maintenance (although NK might be an exception).
Well Tanzania has the Chinese double-seater version of the MiG-17 still flying, but when it comes to the oldest military fighter jet you just can’t beat Bolivia’s T-33s.
thanks a lot baphomet, I just love that Cuban stuff! It’s interesting that the inoperational MiG-21 has a very peculiar type of serial I so far have only seen on MiG-21bis’ of Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville.
It might be off-topic but have you seen black water’s internet site? They have a merchandise shop where you can buy T-shirts stuffed bears with blackwater t-shirts and even stuff for your Christmas tree. 😮 😡
No armament. It was officially declared as a training aircraft and all wing mounted weapons have been removed prior to export. But…. I would not be surprised to find the machine re-militarized one day.
Yep with those underwing pylons and the gray low-viz camo it looks like the typical training aircraft from your local air field 😀 If I’m not mistaken this should be the first fixed wing combat aircraft of a mercenary company (ie not an aircraft that is flown on behalf on some air force and only flown by mercenaries)
WOW :eek::eek::eek:
what armament do they use? Has that one already been used in combat?
@ baphomet, thanks for the hint I had not noticed that, well the overall impression I had was that it probably wasn’t operational but it is a little bit weird to have a non operational Sabre standing in the middle of your airfield.
cy24
Absolutely awesome finds! Have you already tried to contact one of those Zambian guys?
Yep that was exactly the one I meant. The photo of the Bangladeshi Sabre is great, thanks a lot! What do you think, was it operational, when the pic was taken?
