I don’t think there’s anything really unusual going on with that roundel. To me it seems like an 80s star roundel with completely faded red ring and star, plus a white central disc who’s remains are still visible.
I tend to disagree, I know that red fades quite rapidly but I don’t really think that it would completely disappear together with white and that the green still looks almost untouched. Furthermore the Afghan air force of the 80ies probably used stencils while the green part seems to be hand-painted. There’s also a aerial photo showing an Afghan airfield (I think it was Kadahar) with one of the aircraft parked there wearing a green roundel. The white relics could be the Taliban coat of arms which usually was painted on their tanks.
No, mostly you are right there were between 4 and 7 aircraft delivered and apparetnly in rather bad condition. According to some sources they were from Poland according to others from Belarus. Perhaps the Ugandans have sourced MiG-21s from both countries. Apparently some of the Ugandan pilots refused to fly them because they had no log books but they have been flown by Russian contract pilots and Ugandan pilots have been sent to Israel and Eastern Europe for training. One of the Ugandan MiGs was definetly lost when it crashed into lake Victoria and of the rest at least one is a MiG-21UM/US trainer. The remaining aircraft were refurbished at IAI and fitted with flare dispensers and probably also with new ejection seats. I’m not sure whether this was just a refurbishment or whether it was the full MiG-21-2000 upgrade.
I think they were delivered from Poland, there’s a picture of the Migs still wearing their Polish serials and alu paintsheme.
Let’s hope that we are going to see some photos soon. It’ll be interesting to see whether the Mirages will be operated by the Gabonese air force or Mr Bongo’s private mercenary presidential guard (or perhaps by both?).
Gabon is such a weird country the local dictator Omar Bongo (his original name was Albert Bernard he converted to Islam after talking with Gaddafi) is ruling since 1967 and is supposedly one of the richest men of Africa. More recently the incredbly attractive Bongo invited miss Peru to take part in a “Miss Humanity” contest. She was taken to the presidential palace. When standing in a room with Bongo he pushed a button and suddenly a bed appeared. Fortunately she was able to flee 😀

Zaire acquired MiG-23’s? When was this? I know Zimbabwe took delivery of MiG-23’s. Were these aircraft actually re-directed to the Democratic Republic of Congo?
I thought that these were the only ones operational. 7 were delivered of which about 5 or 6 entered service. I think at least one has been lost
I could be wrong though.
Zaire didn’t use Mig-23s, they were were gifted to the Kabila regime by Libya.
The only fighter jets Zaire operated were Mirage Vs, EMB-326s, Soko Jastrebs, one Galeb and Mig-21PFMs.
AFAIK there were already plans to establish a Tamil air force with ultralight aircraft several years ago but the SLAF bombed the airfield. Interestingly the Tamils also have a small navy equipped with speed boats, a few weeks ago there were some heavy battles between it and the Sri Lankan Navy which was supported by Mi-24s gunships :diablo:
All this only works in theory kids. 50 Su-30 Mk’s will not stand up to the first raid by 100 F-15 + 100 F-18 with E-3 and E-2?
So why does Serbia still have five intact Mig-29s?
Chavez isn’t buying S-300s. Why? Because he can’t have seen them in Iran, as none of them are in Iran. He could be talking about an S-200 system, or he could be talking about an actual radar network to work with the Su-30s.
Actually it seems that you were right. Not the missiles but the radar seems to have a range of 125 miles (bad translation by a German newspaper), while the missiles will have a shorter range (possibly Tor M-1). I changed the name of the thread correspondingly.
mm2000 do you have information about possible combat operations of the Iraqi air force in the period from 1991 to 2003? What aircraft did Saddam use against the Kurdish and Shia insurgencies?
At a first sight, my bet goes on Burkina Faso…
Burkinabe Hinds were delivered from Russia. The camo is similiar to the one carried by Rwandan and Equatorial Guinean Hinds.
What about some Ugandan stuff? :dev2:
-General Idi Amin inspecting his airforce in 1974
-several L-29s perform a flyby
-a Ugandan Huey, has anybody ever seen this roundel before?
-Idi lands at a remote village
-a L-29 in Israeli colours preparing for start
-interestingly Ugandan L-29s wore no less than three camo shemes: the purple and brown Israeli one, a tan and green mottled one and the one that can bee seen on this picture.
It’s this one:
Quite interesting since independence in 1960 the DRC alias Zaire had four presidents and no less than four flag changes! 😀
An SU-25K Frogfoot-A and Mi-35V Hind-E over Kinshasa during the elections.
Thanks very much!!! A really great find. Are you sure these pics were taken during the election? I’m asking because the Su still wears the old flag which was replaced some months ago.
Hi
This is Iraqi mirage F-1EQ6 with Exocet missile.
this aircraft have story . the s/n of this aircraft 4566 belong
to mirage F-1EQ5 but it smash in tests before deliverd to Iraq.
so dassault have made this EQ6 with the same s/n of the EQ5.
That is one of Fariborz Shammas’ infamous scale models 😀
If we all agree, and we all do, that 24 or 240 Flankers mean no real threat to the US war machine.
I still think those Sukhois could be quite useful in a limited conflict. For example: Chavez buys North Korean long range range missiles which could reach the USA, they send over a carrier and some F-18s to destroy them. In such a scenario anti-ship missile equipped Su-30s could pose a real threat.
Any chance of follow up orders? Or will it just be the 30?
There were some talks about Su-35s depending on the future oil price to replace F-5s and Mirages.
