The North Korean MD-500 is in my opinion the most spectacular find of the year 😮 thank you so much!
Except the well known interception pictures I only know this footage of a North Korean Fulcrum taking off (at the beginning):

How about taking ~50 million USD, taking them to a hostile clan, equip them with some old fashioned gun boats (retired stuff) and let them go on patrol in front of the ports of Somalia?

Well I guess 40 million go to the Swiss bank account of the clan leader 9,5 million is spent to fight another hostile clan and the rest is insufficient for fighting piracy.
Well seriously the big problem is, no Western parliament will approve the intransparent transfer of so much money to a Somali rag-tag clan militia.
Additionally the clan militias are almost totally defeated and struggle for survival. The only real solution would be to recognize the independence of Somaliland and help them build their army.

Your best bet is to use long endurance stealth spy planes to catch the pirates in the act, watch them tow their booty in, then lay waste to the entire wharf with B-52 carpet bombing. After a few ‘over reactions’ like that by Washington the somalis will fix it themselves.

Doing carpet bombing is among the worst things you could do. You will kill civilians and the number of people joining anti-American hardcore Islamists will increase dramatically

I think hat it is just a tactical and temporary move to secure money and arms. But we’ll have to see.

Well there is a lot of hype about piracy but let’s face it in one or two years time there will be ZERO piracy in that area.
Namely the Islamists will takeover in Somalia and they will enforce their tough laws and tackle the problem (as they have done in the past). Of course we will then have a safe haven for terrorists, something that is probably much worse…

Clearly Madagscar, see the faded flag on the Antonov and the serials on the MiG-21s.

Actually I am totally baffled this idea hasn’t come up yet.

There is this huge show of force with huge vessels that actually are pretty useless against pirates because of their low speeds. Of course there still needs to be a maritime component for commando’s and boarding teams but no armada like this one.

Helicopters would be good choice too. And in Djibouti there is a modern military base which would be more than sufficient for such an operation.

I guess the problem is legal issues. How do you know they are pirates, are you allowed to attack speed boats although you were not attacked yet etc.

Does any AF currently operate older jets as primary fighter than these?

There are still those Bolivian T-33s.

Why such aggression. Let’s face it with Small Air Forces NOTHING is impossible evene if some things are unlikely. I think it is extremely unlikely it was German. Why? Because of the symbols.

Germans fighting with the SU may have existed, but if they did they were probably hard line communists or far left socialist. Two leading members of “Freies Deutschland were the later president of East Germany and Walter Ullbricht later on leader of East Germany.

-Such people would never paint a militaristic cross on their aircraft (even today’s German leftists dislike the eiserne Kreuz painted on their aircraft and used by the Federal Army).

-The black, white and red flag was equally disliked by them, these political groups already used gold red black in the 1920s (or simply red). Black, white and red as seen on the roundel were traditionally colors of the empire and, later on, of the Nazis. After WW2 those colors have only been used by the extreme right parties.

-Imagine you man a piece of anti-aircraft artillery, you see a Focke Wulf coming in. From a far distance you see it has some crosses. What do you do?

A bit of rational analysis instead of senseless flaming.

Considering Rwanda is an African superpower this move is really long overdue.

Great thread! So here we go:

Well, then let’s go back to modern military aviation 😉

These aircraft were seen over Harare in 2002. In the footage they are described as Chinese-built Migs bu they seem to have swept wings instead of delta wings, at least the aircraft on the outer side. Can anyone identify them?

I think this is pretty much the only thread about obscure air forces in the www so any period is welcome.

To make my point: A nice bird from the Georgian air force – a Sowpith Camel :diablo:
