China informed (I think last year) about their expeditionary forces and their intention to develop STOVL planes. They would be used on board of LHDs of course. Russia had talked about STO(V)L planes for the navy, in general, but not as concretely as China as far as I remember. But they have Yakovlev that probably longs for some interesting project like that and has lots of knowledge about the issue. China would support financially and save lots of time, Russia would cash some knowledge China would nevertheless end up acquiring and get some nice plane for their navy and export in the process. Looks fair for both to me.
    .

Yak did a model of this STOL (not sure if its STOVL) stealth jet 2 decades ago. Would its design still be useful today? looks a bit too small to have a bay

Yeah, real nice – though that’s Mirage 2000.

But why does it have a Draken hull number? Mirage would be MR-202 or something.

FAF wanted Mirage in early ’60s, but it was much too expensive. So MiG-21 was acquired instead. FAF considered Mirages many times, but always they were found bit too pricey.

French equipment is always expensive, but at least you’re getting something good for the time.

you’re finnish arent you? what were Finlands experiences about MiG-21 and Draken sinc they had both?
from you rstatement i assume Swedish products were cheaper than French

The Mig-23 was the worst of the 3 for air to air.

The Mirage F1 had the longer reach with its Super 530D missile
the JA-37, especially in the 80s, had the better radar and better medium range missiles. I think at the end of its life it could even fire AMRAAM

MiG-23 was probably far more maintenance heavy and expensive to operate i bet with its swing wings.

but for air to ground roles, I think this is harder.

Mig-27 swing wings did give it better low speed performance and the type did well in India
Mirage F1 could carry the exocet
I believe teh AJ-37 probably had the best load capability

Not to disparage any and all of you guys who have stepped up, but…
    I miss Tango.

Me too. All because Spud got butt hurt over a news article and still hasn’t apologized to Tango for his over-reaction.
In the end, we lost one great source of news updates, while the other guy that remains, hardly even posts.. let alone news.

Just wondering.. do the German and French speaking regions of Switzerland have any biases towards French or German type aircraft in the past?

What money? India has contributed nothing to the Su-57.

It is funny to see people repeating long debunked nonsense from “anonymous Indian defense sources”, in other words, inventions of Indian (and other) media.

They have barely even had access to the plane aside from T-50-4 (or was it -5?) years ago.

This thread in general has long ago devolved to people who don’t actually read Russian sources parroting laughable sources like National Interest, or cherry picking the words of some Russian official to fit their narrative.
There is a reason nobody actually posts Su-57 info here anymore lol.

NIKOLAI LITOVKIN doesn’t sound very Indian to me

    https://www.rbth.com/science-and-tech/328127-no-deal-why-russia-wont-create-indian-su57

Initially, in 2007, the sides signed a contract under which the Indian side invested to the tune of $300m in the development of the design and technical blueprint for the future aircraft. At the same time, the subsequent cost of research, first prototypes, and development of a full production cycle totaled $6bn, which Russia paid for out of its own budget.

“That is where the disagreements started. Launching production of Su-57 fighters in India meant passing all the technology of the new jet fighters to Delhi. The Indians decided that, since they had invested $300m in a project with a total cost of $6bn, Russia would immediately pass on all its research. But since there was no such clause in the contract, Moscow refused to reveal all the information to the investors,” Pavel Bulat, director of the Mechanics and Energy Systems international laboratory at the University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, told Russia Beyond.

At the same time, following the maiden flight of an experimental prototype in 2010, India said it was ready to purchase 214 FGFAs (the Indian version of the Su-57) but only if they were produced exclusively on Indian territory.

According to Bulat, Russia is prepared to pass on all the technology and reveal the production secrets of the Su-57 jet fighter to India for no less than $5bn. The Indians, in turn, say that for this money they can independently develop a fifth generation fighter from scratch themselves.

Although quite honestly 300M out of 6B isn’t that much. So I can understand Russian reluctance to transfer technology
its more the thought that Russia is very willing to do business with India’s main enemy, when you know in the end China will simply just reverse engineer what they need. This doesn’t benefit Russia either.

Russia Unveiled Export Version of Stealth Fighter – Eyeing to Export Su-57E to China and India.

Russia today revealed an export version of its Su-57 stealth fighter jet, potentially to be called the Su-57E and expects to find a market for it primarily in Middle East China and India. China is weighing options to buy Russia’s new Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter jet as Moscow has identified …

Russia to Offer China Su-57 Fifth-Generation Stealth Fighter

Russia is reportedly considering selling China an export version of the Su-57 fighter jet.

    https://thediplomat.com/2019/04/russia-to-offer-china-su-57-fifth-generation-stealth-fighter/

isn’t that a kicker. India spent all this money into the Pak-fa/FGFA/Su-57, and China (its main security threat) will operate them and develop tactics against them.

Also, if its true China is considering the Su-57. its a slap in the face to Chengdu and the J-20.

I don’t really see much alternative options for India though.. either they

    1. Go at it alone (but if its anything like LCA.. it probably won’t reach service until 2050)
    2. Buy F-35s (they probably won’t get the tech transfers they want, but could likely get them sooner than the other options here)
    3. Buy TFX (probably unlikely, Turkey is pro-Pakistan)
    4. Buy KFX (I think it will get built, but might not offer the performance they want)
    5. Wait for Tempest or NGF (won’t appear any time soon, so there’s still that gap).

PAC JF-17 not to participate in LIMA-2019

Second air show where JF-17 participation was pulled out after Tejas presence was confirmed. Previous one was the Bahrain Air Show in 2017, which was the first airshow that the Tejas participated in.

hmm what would be the reason for the JF-17 to withdraw because of the TEjas?

can some one clarify this for me..

What is the Tejas with Canards? I also saw a Tejas with a tri-plane configuration

is this supposed to be MK2? is MK2 the same for both navy and land versions?

looks like a lot of influence from McDonnel Douglas’s JAST/JSF from the 90s. especially the wing and tail and inlet. just no cockpit
