    RE: Previous Worldcups

and anyway, it’s firmly tongue in cheek.

I have no problems with English people… it’s the commentators not shutting up about 1966 that gets me… See my post about things commentators had to say, about two weeks ago…

or, to put it another way…

If the Ing-ur-lish really want to brag about how great their football team is… they’d better be able to put up with it when it all goes pear shaped.

as the Germans would say (or, if this was the Sun ‘as the conceited krauts would say’) Schadenfreude ist die beste Freude… And if you can’t work out what that means, well…

    ‘mon the Samba Boys.

    RE: US Airways

I flew US Airways from Pittsburgh to San Francisco (on a 757) 5 years ago. However, having previoulsy had a 5 hour wait involving a transfer from LHR to LGW, and a 3 1/2 hour transfer at PIT, I was pretty tired by the time I boarded.

I’d say the service is average for a US airline. $4 (or whatever it is) for renting the headphones, and the usual meal choice on American companies of chicken or that other one that no one ever takes…

    RE: EI

    I haven’t heard much recently…
Last October/November, while SR and SN were going out of business, it looked like EI could be joining them, and they were pleading to BA to buy them out.

However, since then, it appears things have got slightly better, although, the pilots strike a couple of weeks ago certainly didn’t help. But for teh moment, they look ok-ish.

EI’s main problem is that their only Intercontinental routes are to the US East Coast (plus LAX), so they were particularly hit after 9/11.

    RE: Previous Worldcups

Well, the game finished 2-2, there was a shot in extra time that didn’t cross the line, and, in accordance with Law 7.9 (Effect of prematurely ending the game: A game which is terminated prematurely by the referee for any reason, such as a persistent thunderstorm, the field becoming waterlogged by rain, or excessive spectator interference, is considered abandoned), the game was stopped when Kenneth Wolsentholme said “Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over” (nb, this is before the “it is now” bit).

So, obviously, the game did finish in abandonment, and not, as some people mistakenly think, in an Ing-ur-lund victory. QED. 😉

South Korea’s golden goal hero Ahn Jung-hwan has had his contract terminated by Serie A club Perugia after his goal eliminated Italy from the World Cup finals.
Quoted in Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, Perugia chairman Luciano Gaucci said: “That gentleman will never set foot in Perugia again.”

Italy has reacted with fury to yesterday’s shock 2-1 defeat to South Korea, accusing the referee and football’s ruling body FIFA of fixing the match.

Ahn, who missed a penalty earlier in the match, was hailed as a national hero when he headed home the golden goal winner in the 116th minute.

But his goal was viewed in a different light at Perugia, in central Italy, where he has been viewed as an under-achiever during his stay at the club.

“He was a phenomenon only when he played against Italy. I am a nationalist and I regard such behaviour not only as an affront to Italian pride but also an offence to a country which two years ago opened its doors to him,” Gaucci was quoted as saying.

“I have no intention of paying a salary to someone who has ruined Italian soccer.”

Ahn joined Perugia on loan from the South Korean team Pusan I.cons in the summer of 2000. He scored five goals in 29 appearances.

A Perugia spokesman said today that the club had virtually decided to release Ahn even before the World Cup tie.

I saw this at half time of the Japan game this morning. It seemed to me the fires at the edge of the wings were there just before they came off.

    A very strange sight.
