    RE: Overreaction regarding safety measures?

My problem about banning hand luggage is that my hold luggage invariably gets lost.

In fact, last time I made two connections I checked 2 bags in at BSL, and they managed to lose 1 of them at the first transfer point (ZRH), and the other at the second (LHR). The first was forwarded to London, where it was promptly lost again.

I had my bags back 2 days later, but say you have medicine or important paperwork, and you had to put it in the hold rather than carry it on. You couldn’t keep a meeting on hold for two days, or not take medicine for that long. Especially if you’ve travelled abroad and can’t replace the medicine.

And anyway, does that mean duty free shops will be abolished? Again, I always end up with at least 1 plastic bag from the Duty free when I’m travelling internationally. How can THAT be carried on, and a briefcase not?

    It dosen’t make sense.

    RE: Virgin Bomb scare

as far as not hearing about the Virgin scare in LA, I can well believe that. I’ve been watching a lot of news, and neither CNN nor Fox, both of which I get via satellite mentioned anything about it, as they were to busy updating what was happening at ground zero. Sky News, BBC News 24 and ITN News all covered it. If you want to read up, there’s an article at BBC News online (news.bbc.co.uk)

RE: American airlines feel the heat.

All I’ve heard confirmed so far is that Continental are cutting it’s workforce by 12000, and that CO, UA and NW are each cancelling about 20% of their flights.

In Britain, Virgin yesterday announced 1200 redundancies, and they’ll be parking all their 747-200’s.

RE: passenger plane( that is what they say) hits world trade center.

The twice I’ve flown transcontinental flights in the states they’ve’s both times been full. 4 years ago, I flew PIT-SFO with US Airways, and SFO-EWR with United. Both were 757s.

As to these particular flights being relatively empty, the departures were all around 8am local time, due to arrive in California around 11am local time. From that point of view, I wouldn’t have expected them to be particularly full of business passengers, who, I think would be more likely to travel after work, say 6-7pm, and get in around 9-10pm.

Smaller aircraft (than the 757) don’t have the range. These flights are all some 2500-3000 miles.

    RE: The airlines/aircraft involved

My father, en route LHR-EWR with BA this morning reports that there are currently 48 transatlantic aircraft on the tarmac at Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Passengers aren’t being allowed to disembark, and the crew on his flight aren’t expecting to return to London for at least 24 hours.

    RE: BA & A380?

Interesting question. My guess would be 2 777’s.

After all, the A380 will be powered by, certainly to start with, the RR Trent. The Trent was also an Option for 777’s, so from that aspect, I suspect the Noise/Exhausts will be similar from 4 on the A380 to 2 777’s with 2 each, even allowing for different thrust ratings/versions.

However, surely 1, albeit larger, aircraft will cause less enviromental polution that 2? Which is my basing for my original guess.

If anyone has any better info, I’d be interested to know the scientific facts.

    RE: Virgin in Star Alliance?

what does overlapping matter? Look at BA and AA… they’re competitive on transatlantic segments because of a lack of antitrust immunity… surely it would be the same with VS?

VS also codeshare on some flights from LGW to LAX and SFO with CO, and some BD domestic flights carry VS prefixes. There’s plenty to muse about there.

I don’t know how much there is to see at CDG… I’ve only transferred there recently, and there wasn’t much to see in Terminal 2B, but 2F has plenty of windows. But I don’t know what can be seen landside.

RE: where to meet at ZRH

ok, didn’t like ZRH at all…

there’s some building work going on now, so my flight was a from a bus gate.

After the bus got to Terminal A arrivals/Transfer, you go up a staircase, at the top of which is teh SR transfer desk… there was a long queue, and I’d already checked in, so I ignored it. I turned immediately to my left to follow the signs to my onward gate (I only had 40 mins), and was confronted with a long queue for teh metal detectors. After negotiating them, I was already in a lounge, which I assumed to be a transfer lounge. After a quick trip to the small (satelite) duty free, where I enquired about wider ranges, I was told I’d have to go back to before security control, so that was a no-no. Anyway, went downstairs from the lounge, and I was at the gate. So, I saw absolutely nothing.

Keltic, beware you don’t go to far to soon.

    Have a good trip!
