    RE: Near miss at heathrow

LAST EDITED ON 06-05-01 AT 02:18 AM (GMT)[p]Ok, I’ve had a look at the BBC website, and there was an incident involving an IB aircraft and a UA 747 ( I alluded to this incident already), details [link:news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_1310000/1310877.stm|here], on Thursday, May 3rd, but there was also an incident involving a BD Airbus and a BA 747 on Friday, April 28, details of which can be found [link:news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_731000/731550.stm|here].

Having said that, neither of the reports are very in-depth.

    Cheers,

As I understood it from a brief mention on Radio 1, it involved an Iberia flight taking off, and a United flight coming in. I didn’t get any other details, though.

Jetlag, BA manage a full cooked breakfast on LHR GLA, a 50 minute sector.
James, as I said, I was on a flight at a similar time and wasn’t served anything, bar a a cup of luke warm coffee. And I hadn’t the previous night on the transatlantic flight.
    Hey, who cares?

    RE: 747-400 versus MD 11 versus A-340

LAST EDITED ON 25-04-01 AT 08:25 PM (GMT)[p]Geforce,
Swissair won’t be relying on the MD-11 much longer. They already have a dozen or so A330-200’s, and are scheduled to be a launch customer for the A340-600 in due course. Once the 600’s are introduced, the MD-11’s are due to be replaced. I think the problem SR have with the MD-11 is more that the swiss press will not stop reminding people of SR111 every time there’s an inflight incident, and the trust of the swiss people is no longer with the MD-11.
Sabena are actually trying to get rid of their A340-300’s, so one can presumably read between the lines that the MD-11’s are more efficient than the 300’s.
Nonetheless, I don’t think you can realistically say that either is over reliant on the MD-11’s for their intercontinental fleets, if you discount KLM for also operating the 747 (I think they have the 767, too). After all, both SR and SN have A330’s, and SN (for the moment, anyway) have A340’s, too.

    Cheers,

    RE: Regional airlines

Ah, Crossair, I’ve travelled a lot with them.
Their Catering isn’t as good as it used to be (filled rolls on most flights under 2 hours now, and no coffee, except Breakfast time flights), but it is a very enjoyable experience travelling with them. Nonetheless, their seats seem to be getting smaller (the pitch is impossible), but they’re all leather.
Champagne is practically compulsary on board.
As to fleet, they have 4 MD83’s, a dozen Avro RJ85/100s, 10 Saab SF340Bs, two dozen Saab 2000s, and 10 Embraer RJ145s, with more to come.
The 340s are being phased out, with the 2000s replacing them on their routes, and the new Embraers taking over the 2000s routes. The new Embraer 170 and 190 will replace the Avros from 2004 (I think that’s the date), and the MDs will be replaced by A320’s in late 2002. The average age of the fleet is currently only about three years, though it’ll be unbelievable once the fleet renewal has been completed in a couple of years time.
They’re definately worth a trip, some time.

    RE: Shortest and longest flights

Thre’s a shorter one than that… BA (or rather Loganair) have a flight scheduled for 2 minutes, from Westray to Papa Westray, in the Orkney Isles. The two runways are alligned, with only a stetch of water between them. The actual distance flown is less than the length of the runways at Heathrow.
It’s in the Guinness Book of Records.

I wouldn’t say there are Ugly aircraft, just ones that aren’t as aesthetically pleasing as others.

Good Year? Nothing to with BA, then… They use Dunlop. AF do use Good Year, though.

er, I dunno if you guys read that some of the British Olympic Team in Sydney suffered from DVT.
Having said that, I think the media coverage is OTT. I wa son the BA shuttle from GLA to LHR on Monday, a 50 minute flight, and just before the safety demonstration, the purser reccomended we read the ‘well being in the air’ section of the inflight magazine.
I then connected to a LX MD-80 for LHR BSL, and found that I couldn’t move my right knee, as it was wedged against the seat in front. There’s certainly a case for a bit more leg room, but there’s no point exagerating it.

It’s not Europe, but apparently, there were a couple of cases in Italy and Greece two years ago, but there was no uproar. I think it’s just cause it was in Britain, and everyone was still worried about BSE.
BAA are urging people not to take foodstuffs with them when they leave Britain, so I can’t believe that airline food is suspect.

    RE: Sabena

I travelled Sabena at Christmas, I didn’t realise their problem was that, but I have to say I wasn’t particularly convinced with the service on the RJ100 I travelled on. It was a two hour, early morning flight, and the ‘meal’ was a sandwich. I wouldn’t have minded, but the timetable had said ‘breakfast’, so I hadn’t eaten/drunk anything beforehand.
At times like that, I always long for the BA fry-up on the 50 minute shuttle services…

I’m surprised you found old planes. I think there only elder planes (apart from Concorde) are classic 747’s, and second generation 737’s.
They also operate A340’s, 747-400, 777-200’s and 767-300’s long haul, and A319/320/321’s on shorthaul.
    They have orders for 777-300ER’s, A380’s, A330’s and A318’s.
So I suspect that they will soon have a very young fleet.

I wouldn’t worry about low cost airlines maintenance… Certainly not British ones.
I have total faith in the CAA’s issuing of Air Operators’ Licences.
