RE: LHR – Terminal 5?
it’s all very well to go on about high speed trains, but unless you live in the UK, it’s difficult to imagine the state that the rail industry is in in Britain.
As far as I’m concerned, the sooner Terminal 5 gets built, the better.
RE: Would you…….?
Hell, I’d have travelled on it two days after the crash if I’d have been given a ticket. I actually flew into LHR the day after the crash, and saw 1 or 2 concordes over by the hangars. Looking at them, I knew instictively it hadn’t been a fault originating onboard.
RE: Who is it???
just about every magazine awards an ‘airline of the year’ title… so, a lot of airlines can simultaneously be ‘airline of the year’
RE: Singaporean Jumbo crashes in Taiwan
apparently some of the lights on 05L were damaged in an incident earlier in the day. The extent of the damage has not, however been confirmed.
RE: Singaporean Jumbo crashes in Taiwan
latest reports say SQ accept that the A/C, 9V-SPK, was on the wrong runway. Clearance was granted for 05L, but apparently the plane was on 05R. This runway was closed, and not lit, while 05L was lit. It seems very strange to me that an experienced pilot, as to all extents the Malay Captain is, should make such a catastrophic mistake.
RE: Singaporean Jumbo crashes in Taiwan
ok, 78 confirmed dead, with 85 injured, and 16 uninjured.
well, it could have been worse.
RE: Singaporean Jumbo crashes in Taiwan
I don’t know about windshear, the captain reports hitting something on the runway, this is starting to sound like concorde…
RE: american airports
Yes, I’m not particularly keen on the airports I’ve passed through in the States: PIT, SFO and EWR.
PIT, I couldn’t really have cared what it had as I was too tired to do anything but sit having come in from LGW, while SFO didn’t seem to have much to do, although I didn’t turn up to soon before as my flight was at 8am. I just had time for some breakfast before my flight. Worst of all was EWR. YOu have to be there 2 hours before for International flights, fair enough. Ok, they were doing some rebuilding at the time, but all there was to do was a small newsagent.
I found YYZ to be much better equipped for things to do in North America.
RE: Singaporean Jumbo crashes in Taiwan
The only details confirmed are that there were 179 people on board. SQ spokesmen in Taipei say 84 injured and 47 dead while 48 are unaccounted for. SQ spokeman in LA, however, report 49 deaths and 69 injuries.
I’ve heard reports that all three of the flight crew are among the injured.
I’m surprised at the mention of ‘three’, as, for the -400, there should only be two members of flight crew.
It apears to me that the Captain made the wrong decison in deciding to take off, with gusts of up to 160km/h (90mph) reported.
:'(
RE: dangerous airlines
ok, I’m not surprised Aer Lingus came off so well, but tell us what criteria you used.
RE: the world’s largest airline’s
Actually, it depends how you qualify ‘largest airline’.
United have the most personnel,
American have the biggest turnover,
Delta have the most aircraft.
It also depends if you want to count franchises in all these equasions.
RE: air pockets
I was on a Crossair Saab 340 on a flight ZRH BSL about ten years ago, when we hit an air pocket. Only time I’ve been in one. To be honest, it was over before I had time to panic. They’re not that bad, really. Nothing to worry about, modern aircraft deal with them problemlessly.
RE: being new
I’m not sure. Certainly the GLA JFK flight was a 757, so I assume that was the long haul configured 75. However, BA no longer operate that flight. I thought it (the plane) may have possibly been moved to Manchester for long haul flights from there, but I don’t think it was.
Incidentally, the shuttle flights between LHR and GLA/EDI/MAN are not all economy. They’re shuttle class, which is booking class C.
RE: british midland
An Interesting Idea. However, I don’t think the market around East Midlands is big enough. Can you imagine trying to sell that to an American. In fact, I’ve only got a scant idea of where it is myself. Manchester at least everyone has heard of, and should tie in better with BD/LH connection flights.
Incidentally, Continental have applied to start flying from Mewark to Stansted, as of march and the new timetable. That’s a better proposition for travellers to London than either Heathrow or Gatwick, surely?
RE: being new
It depends on the time. BA used to only use 757’s on the shuttle services, but the last twice I’ve flown LHR-GLA, I’ve been in an A320. On the 6:30am flight from GLA to LHR, a 767 is used certainly on Mondays, probably also Fridays. I’ve also been on 737’s on the LHR route, while only 737’s are used for the LGW route.
